Either go to a bank or credit union. Most have a minimum of $50 to start with.
A credit union you have to open up a savings account $5.00 and keep that in there the entire time you are a member! |

Barclays do a basic account called a cash card account, you can have direct debits but not standing orders and you can only get cash out from the atm machine, you can't use it in shops. |

Skip the banks all together and get a membership to a Credit Union. Pawn some jewerly for cash and open up a zero balance required checking account. Credit Unions are less likely to screw you. Banks will screw you unless you are vigilant. |

HSBC offer a basic bank account.
It is very basic though. You cannot have direct debits. Or a debit card.
You will only get a cash card. |

In the UK a while back the government required banks to offer non-status accounts for those without access to bank accounts. Unfortunately not all banks began these schemes but Abbey National, Nationwide, Barclays and a few others do offer them.
They are pretty basic but you can set up direct debits, standing orders etc. and you do get a cash card. But you don't get a debit card or a cheque book or an overdraft. |

Show up with some cash, and any bank should let you open an account. It'll have a minimum balance, and it might have some fees, but you can get an account. |

You can open a post office account even if you have been made bankrupt. Don't know if this helps? |
