Where can i get a debt card when I have bad credit history?
I bank with a well known high street bank. Unfortuately due to circumstances i have a bad credit history. My bank will not issue me with a debt card. However, all I want to do is to open up an account where I can pay money in and take it out. I am not after any credit just purely the means to pay bills and shopping etc over the phone . It seems simple, if I have not got the the money in the account I can't pay as I don't even want an overdraft. Is there a bank or facility like the post office who can provide this service.

You can get a prepaid debit card without any problems with bad credit.

These work in the same way as normal debit cards, but you have to put the money on first before you use the card, which you can do by bank transfer, or by cash at some shops.

These cards allow you to buy online or in the high street the same as normal cards.

There is a small charge (up to £10) to get the card, and then small fees for topping up the card.

Have a look at the site below which explains more about them and displays all the costs associated with each card.

ICICI bank will give you a current account, visa electron card and a chequebook, you can apply online and you will get it, I am with them and the account is very good, I also have a hisave savings account with them, I cannot fault them, you can download the application form and it takes about a week, you can use the visa card as you would use a switch card for paying for items over the counter with a pin number, the only downside is you cannot pay with the card for anything online or over the phone but in a shop it is fine.

Check this one: http://www.badcreditresources.com/bad-credit-credit-cards.html -- it has a list of lenders/companies that gives credit cards to people with bad credit score.

Many drug stores carry rechargeable pre-paid credit cards. Greendot.com comes to mind. Give it a try.

They are more expensive to use than a debit card. You have to pay to add money to them, but they do restore the convenience of having a debit or credit card.

Banks have to provide the facility for basic accounts - for people on limited means. This means the debit cards associated with those accounts generally don't support overdrafts etc. If your current bank does not have a basic account (I suspect you have not checked this) go to another.

ive had the same problem, it's only Natwest and the co-operative bank that will issue you will debit cards, natwest will give you a solo card no matter wot your credit score is providing you havent got freud against your name, and co-op will give you a visa electron card no matter your history.
Good luck

Hubby had the same problem but Halifax gave him a very basic account with a debit card...I am assuming this is what you mean, not a debt card....

Try going into a couple of banks like Abbey or Nationwide, they will provide a cash card like a `Solo`. Tell them you don`t want credit or overdraft facilities, be honest with them about your situation. It`s actually called a debit card.
You have to be present when you use the card though, it isn`t the same as a Maestro, so you won`t be able to use it over the phone or Internet.
There is advice on the FSA website about banks and different accounts, all banks are authorised by the FSA.

Visa have a card where you credit it and then can use that.

basically it works like a mobile phone top up.

should fit your needs.

It has been my experience that you need to find a bank that their debt system is computerized. That way you can only take out what is in.

Many are not totally computerized. That would allow you to take more out than you have in.

That is why they will turn you down for a debit card.

There are banks out there that are set up for what you need. But may be difficult to find in your area.

Good luck.

Another suggestion: If you still owe a bank $$, pay it ALL back and they should bring you back on board.

From a company that is going to charge you too much interest, and keep you in debt.

If you have a Job and have your paycheck directly deposited to a checking account you should be able to get a debit card. But be careful if you spend more than is in the account they will charge you extremely high fees. I think you should talk to someone to help you manage your finances and set up some sort of plan.
