Pick HBSC, then you won't have any spelling mistakes.

HSBC is better because it gives a better human touch. They treat their customers with respect. Go for them.

Allience & Leicster, if you don't mind banking on line and pay in over £500 pound a month. They give you £50 when you join 0% interest overdraft (with no charges for 6 or 12 months) and you get a decent level of interest on your current account. The big high street banks are rip off merchants.

Got to be Barclays they have been excellent oh and in response to one of the other people who have answered dont go near Nat West they are awful!!

One is as good as the other. Both are huge multi-national banks. For a debit card you'll need to open a checking account.

Who on earth is Barkleyes? I think you mean Barclays lol..

If you want a debit card then apply for a Current Account. However, if this is your first Bank Account, then you may not get a full debit (ie Maestro / Visa Delta) card straight away, you may end up with a Solo card for around 6 months until you can demonstrate to the bank that you are a good customer and can operate your account correctly.

As to which is best? Most of the big 4 High Street Banks (Natwest, Barclays, Lloyds-TSB and HSBC) are the same really. You don't say whether you are a student or graduate as most banks offer incentive schemes to this customer group.

Essentially, who you bank with is your choice and, unless you fit into one of the groups mentioned above, I personally would bank with the one that was most convenient for me (by convenience I mean things such as Internet / Phone banking etc. not just where the Branch is)

I have an account with both and I recommend Barclays. The human touch mentioned in a previous message must depend on the branch. In the town where I live Barclays staff are much more friendly and helpful - and queues are dealt with quicker.

You need to apply for a current account, this will come with a Connect Debit card.

I also recommend Barclays because I have never been charged by them for anything. HSBC has charged me for an extra statement and for transferring money where Barclays did not.

They are also helpful when it comes to applying to open other accounts such as savings accounts and helped me to choose the best way to get the most interest on my money.

HSBC!!!! but actually their Internet version, First Direct, on line banking, 24 hr 365 days telephone banking ( A real person every time even 3am Christmas day) Great products, great service, great interest rates. They even sent me a huge bunch of flowers when their computer cancelled all my direct debits accidentally, that was 7 years ago, and no glitches since.
www.firstdirect.com 08456 100100, give them a try, everyone I have recommended them to, loves them!!

I have banked with both and now bank with neither, although I do bank with a branch of HSBC (First Direct) so I'd say HSBC. But a bank is a bank is a bank...their ultimate goal is to make money off you!

I used to bank with Barclays but didn't think the customer service was that good. Personally, I think all banks are awful in the UK and the staff are only sales people trying to sell you credit to ruin your life.
I bank with Natwest. I love the fact they only have UK call centres, at least you can understand what type of credit the person on the end of the phone is sell you.

abdulaziz t
you should apply for a current/fixed account
