Checking - Being a student pick a bank that has a branch and free ATM as close to where you are going to be as possible (unless the fees are outrageous.)
others have said:
a) Wells Fargo has lots of locations, HORRIBLE customer service.(same for all big banks, BA, Key bank, US bank, etc) these big banks stick it to you any way they can, very sneeky ways, like holding deposits till the next day while cashing checks so they can ding you with bounced check charges, etc.
b) Wa-Mu (Washington Mutual) OK to Good service for a medium to big bank maybe fewer locations depending on where you live.
c) local small bank Great customer service, one or a few locations, might have high fees for out of net work ATMs.
Savings
Open an account with www.emigrantdirect.com 5.05% its the best rate and the easiest to use, no fees and no minimums. You would have to open you checking first as all fund transfers are electronic between them and your checking. |

Compare the banks in your area and go with the one that has the highest interest rates and the lowest fees. |

Depending on where you live: Wells Fargo is a good place, they have an account especially for College Students (no fees) both checking and savings. Check it out, also try Washington Mutual both are good places for students. |

They're all pretty much the same for checking accounts. Most banks offer a free checking account if you do direct deposit from an employer.
Savings I would go with someone like ING if you have some money you just want to leave there. They have pretty high interest rates, which means you'll earn more money, just for leaving it there.
Hope that helps :-) |

For a student, especially one who's away from home, it is best to find a bank that has many branches all over the states especially one that has a branch close to your university or college.
Most banks offer benefits and services that are competitive with other banks so if it is just for simple banking purposes, then they're all pretty much comparable. It is when you have a lot of money to deposit/invest that you need to be more discerning and will need to really do comparative shopping. |

I've been using Washington Mutual.
They offer 5% APY for online savings / checking accounts with NO FEES.
No monthly fees.
$ 1.00 minimum deposit.
No fees for domestic wired transfers.
3 cents reward on purchases made with debit cards. |

Depends on what kind of services you need/require.Free checking, overdraft protection, loans, fees @ATMS, You call the shots !!Usually a small town bank is a bit more relaxed and treat you better than say WAMU or others.Anyway that has been my experience and I have been doing biz w/ a sm. bank for over 30 yrs. |

anywhere but bank of America. the best bet though is a local hometown bank. negatives are you wont find them everywhere but they care about you more & you can you usually get some kind of incetive for joining. wachovia's free student checking is pretty good, except for there online banking its never accurate |

Just go for the one with the highest interest rates. If you change your mind, you can always move to another bank. People do it all the time. |
