roxya153 | Which dollar amount on a check does the bank use? |
The number in the box or the written out amount? Sometimes my numbers look like other numbers and I get worried that I might get too much or too little taken out of my account. |

The written amount.
Per Division 3 (Negotiable Instruments) of the Uniform Commercial Code:
Section 3114 (Contradictory terms of instrument):
"If an instrument contains contradictory terms, typewritten terms prevail over printed terms, handwritten terms prevail over both, and words prevail over numbers."
ETA I've never commented on getting a thumbs down before but....a thumbs down for providing the legal source of the info? Wow. What can I say -- as a lawyer who had to, you know, learn this stuff, I believe in citing the source. |

From what I've encountered in the past, the keypunch operators at check clearing houses use the numbers unless they're not clear and they need to read the more time consuming spelled out amount to match, possibly rejecting the check for supervisor action (and delay in getting to the bank).
When I've had to call the bank to correct checks (for my mother's account until I took over all check writing as Power of Attorney), it was due to a misread numeric amount that wasn't clear - and, of course like many people, my mother didn't spell out the penny amount but repeated the illegible numerals.
All my checks have been printed via printer for the past 4 decades - with bold printing for both amounts and the pennies spelled out, too - eliminating the confusion in that regard - some checks have been honored even when I forgot to sign them. |

The written amount "two hundred and twenty two" leads over the numbers in the box "$222.00" |

The two must match or the cheque isn't honoured -in theory. Of course people check these things and people make mistakes. |

The written amount is what the bank is required to use. |

they look at the long written out part.
example $8.00
Eight Dollars (what they look at) |

the written amount is the legal amount which is what will be taken from the account
the numeric amount is for convenience |

As a former bank operations manager, I can tell you that the numeric amount is what goes into the system when you cash a check. If an issue arises, then the written amount will control. |

I guess they probably make sure the amount in the dollar box matches with the amount that you write out. |

They use both as it's a precautionary measure. If the teller or cashier assumes that both figures are the same, then all is OK. However, if there appears to be a discrepancy then a follow up (ie you'll probably receive a call from your bank) will take place.
Clearly your handwriting isn't as bad as you think it is! |

that's why you have to write it out and write it in the box. if they can't read it in the box, they look to see how you spelled it out. |

They are supposed to match...but most banks go by the numerical representation rather than what is written... |
