In the United States, very few industries mandate retirement - most people are allowed to continue working if they want to and are productive. But in general, retirement age is considered to be when you can start collecting retirement funds, which is 65 for both men and women born before 1938. After that birth year, it starts increasing until it reaches 67. In general, everyone pays into Social Security, and you can start collecting full benefits at retirement age. You can start collecting a few years early, but at a reduced pay-out.
I'm 43, so I'll be able to collect full benefits at age 67 in 2030. However, Social Security will be underfunded by 2040, and so I'll probably only get about 70% of what has been promised. To fix this, the government will probably have to raise the retirement age to at least 70.
Most people here now save for retirement in their own accounts, because the amount we get from Social Security is minimal. |

You can retire at whatever age you want if you have made suitable financial provisions.
In the UK you would not recieve a state pension until the age of 65 but you are by no means obliged to work until that age if you have made your own arrangements as above. |

In uk it is 60 for women and 65 for men, at the moment ,but I think that is due to change gradually so that women will retire at 65 too. |

Well I am mid 50's and have been retired on a full pension for almost ten years....but the state retirement age is 65 for men and 60 for women...but this is changing over time so that both sexes retire at 65 in about 10 years time |

There is NO SUCH thing as a retirement age ANYWHERE. If you manage your money well, you can quit working before you are eligible to collect any form of pension in any country. If you manage it poorly, no form of pension is enough to live comfortably at any age. |
