Fallen Angel | Who do I contact about an unfair overdraft charge? |
I've tried ringing my bank and they refuse to let it go, they say if I don't pay, I'll be charged more.
I was charged £25 for buying something 2p more than what I had in my bank (hense, was unable to pay... by 2p...)
Aside from the fact they can hardly understand me (indian call centres...) They just wont let it go and can't seem to answer questions directly (as if they're reading out of a manual and know nothing)
So what can I do? If I can't get it from the bank, then what?
P.S. The banks Abbey National if it matters, and I'm on benefits. |

You spent more than you had. they covered the 2p for you and charged you 25 for doing it. They arent going to reverse it. yes they can charge you more. Its called a daily overdraft fee. Pay them what you owe before it gets higher. Then you can close the account if you feel you were treated unfairly. Get an account with overdraft protection.
A "hometown" bank is always better in cases like this. they are often willing to reverse fees to keep their customers satisfied. Also a hometown bank is more likely to give you a loan. since the bank officers can make decisions theirself instead of having to clear things through a huge conglomo bank. |

Ignore the call centres. Write a letter to your bank manger, tell them you can't afford to pay. If you normally keep your account in order, most reasonable managers will cancel the charge as a goodwill gesture.
As a last resort write to the FSA, you can get free template letters from the link below |

Go to your local branch and speak to the manager -if they still refuse to refund your money write to the banking ombudsman. Google for address |

Sounds like you are just calling their overseas call center. Does this bank you do business with have a branch near you? You would do better to get this reversed if you were to meet with a manager at the bank face to face.
The Indians in the overseas call centers ARE just reading a script on a computer screen...they do NOT think out of the box to fix your issue, because they don't have a grasp of the english language, and they weren't trained to do anything BUT read what is on the screen and say, "I am sorry, I cannot help" a lot! LOL |

if you bought something over the amount in your bank account then it was a fair overdraft charge but if you couldn't buy the item cause you didn't have enough money for the full amount and they didn't take the money out then it is an unfair charge and its really up to the bank to decide if they are going to correct it or not. |

I always find letters are the best way to complain to banks. They always seem to get forwarded to someone able to resolve your complaint sensibly. I find phoning them no help at all as you get stuck being transferred to different departments, none of which are able to help. |

best advice would be to change banks.... they sound like they are in it for themselves and not the customer.. maybe they will qualify for a future "bailout." If need be go down there in person... Tell them you are going to change banks if this isn't resolved... If they still refuse to help you out.. go elsewhere. best of luck.. I've dealt with banks like this... They wait until they know you don't have enough money in your account and then they post the amount... Washington Mutual was like this. Had like 4 or 5 overdraft, partly my fault, did not balance check book, but realized they were in it for themselves when they would not help me out.. so I was out.. Havn't had any probs with new account... balance your checkbook... |

don't argue about the correctness of the bank's action. you will not win that battle. simply beg saying that you have been a good customer for a long time and a silly error occurred and you would like to beg that these charges be reversed as you would like to continue to keep your money in that bank and you are a happy customer. say something like "kindly reverse these charges as they were caused by a trivial oversight and i will be sure not to make this error again." please trust me. those fees will be reversed. banks need customers as much as customers need banks but confrontational situations don't offer any advantages in this regard. |

Call them again. I had this with my bank. I'd accidentally used the wrong card and gone over into an unauthorised overdraft by £16 and got charged £21. After complaining for about 15minutes about the unfairness and the fact that i'd already paid it as soon as i'd realised, I finally just said "I want it removed". At that point the guy on the other end of the phone said "okay i'll get it waived".
I think, they're not allowed to offer to waive it or remove the charge until you specifically ask for that to be done. Silly I know, but these rules often apply in a lot of places like this.
Good luck |
