Why are pennies copper and all the other coins silver?

Additional Details
If the whole face value thing made sense, then why are a nickel, dime and quarter not the same value? Is this where size comes into play?

Pennies aren't copper any more they're mostly Zinc! And the other coins aren't silver they're mostly made out of nickle. (which is how the 5 cent piece got called a nickle, but now all the "Silver" coins are nickle.)

As to why back in the day pennys were made out of copper? because it was a cheap metal that wouldn't corrode too badly.

Chefed#1
Pennies are copper plated zinc.
Nickles are nickel and magnesium
Dime ,quarters and halves are a copper nickel sandwich with a copper core.
The new dollars are a copper core with an alloy of manganese brass ,zinc and nickel.
The U.S.Mint does sell special silver proof sets .The silver coins are the half ,quarters ,and dime.

Copper is cheaper than silver. It would not make sense minting a coin on a metal that is more expensive than the face value. Going further, some countries have paper bills that have huge denominations like 1000 or 2000. This means that their currency is so weak that they have to make the denomination big enough to save on the cost of the paper it was printed on.

Who dat
Jake...***, your first answer is correct. Jake is just ignorant and dee-dee-dee as Carlos mencia would say.

actually pennies are only copper coated, they have zinc on the inside. And other coins are made of varios metals. Nickels are/ were made of mickle. Quarters used to be silver, but are now copper in the middle and some other metal on the outside.

back when the US was on the gold standard, a penny was exactly the amount of copper that was worth one cent. This means they changed the amount every year. now they all weight the same.

Oh, and coins are different sizes and shape so you can quickly tell the difference between them.

Because Lincoln freed the slaves that's also why his head turns the opposite way than anyone else on the other coins.

Well, actually, after 1964 there aren't any coins made out of silver. The nickel has never been made of silver. (hence the name nickel.) During WWII, some pennies were actually made of steel, not copper, because of the copper shortage during the war.

Pennys are $00.01. ( One cent, because copper is cheper than other metals. What its made of is it's value.

Because it's only worth one cent. The metals in coins are proportionate to their value.

because they are cheaper to produce and most american money is no longer silver it is a composit of zinc and nickel with a sliver coating the last year for silver was 1963
