There are 2 kinds of debt collectors -- legit and scum. Yes, debts should be paid and people collecting them have the right and duty to pressure people to do it, but they are not allowed to harass the debtor.
The scum collectors break federal law on a daily basis and harass people in violation of the FDCPA. Imagine getting 20 phone calls a day lasting up to 3 am, up to and including lying and shouting at the debtor. |

it's not that they are attempting to collect the debt, it's the tactics many debt collectors use. some even say things to make a person feel concerned for the safety and stability of their family.
Clark Howard, a consumer activist, has documented cases of debt collectors saying they will have a person's children given away unless they pay back their debt.
I'm sure, as with anything, honest debt collectors exist, but there are too many documented cases of unethical tactics for people to embrace them. |

well i had a screw up this year...my dad was sick w/ cancer and he needed full round care..hospice was not an option for him..so i took the time off work to do what i had to do...he told me that there would be money to pick up the pieces...needless to say his gf robbed him/me/bro...blind after he died...she took all the cash in the house...and ran...and we can't find her...nice lady..anyway...i am stuck w/ bill collectors calling left and right...and doing the right thing...working 2 jobs now to catch up etc.....but they call and bother you....they start calling at 7am...which is illegal...and they don't stop calling till 11pm..which is also illigal....i have a child who is sleeping and for them to call at these times is unfair...at least i make the attempt to pay the bill..i pay what i can....and i make payments every week...i have no regrets taking care of my dad even tho it put me in this spot...i will get out of it soon...but my dad i will never see again till it is my time....
OOOHHH and if they spoke english....at least understandable english...perhaps i wouldn't get so nasty either... |

when collectors go about it fairly and legally then they don't have to worry about being mistreated. Very few people make debts with no intention of paying. Most feel horrible and try their best to make sure those debts are paid. Having a collector call you, threaten and harrass you doesn't help. It only further hinders the situation.
People will make payments when they can. Harrassing them, doesn't put money in their bank acct. |

Its the way collectors talk to the debtors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The lies and the scare tactics they use. I understand they have bills to pay too. But maybe if they used a little bit of sugar when they call to collect they might see that the debtors would try a little harder to pay....... |

The problem with collectors are they have no customer service conduct. I'm not saying that everybody but most of them. They actually harrasing people just to pay so they get paid. I think they tried so many ways and they found out that this is the only thing that will work. In my opinion, instead of doing that, they can just work it out with the person in debt on how to get it paid. The problem with the collectors is they want to get paid now. People are owning debt because they have financial problems. Some are having a problems specially nowdays that there's a lot of layoffs. Others are just worst in handling their money. Either way, if the collectors is changing their strategy then the people might not hide from them. Everything should work if you talk camly. |

Debt collectors are the scum of the earth. They are the only way predatory lenders have any chance of collecting.
Predatory lenders specifically target those who are financially vulnerable, enticing them with easy immediate cash/credit without requiring any collateral at all.
By selling advertising space in their bills, they more than make back any amount of money you might ever borrow.
They also stack the deck against their victims by lining up a host of fees that work with a domino effect to completely destroy someone financially.
Then when you're down, they kick you again by sending their scumbag debt collectors after you.
I'd like to see the predatory lenders and their scumbag collectors in prison.......maybe Dr.Henry would even like to join them? |

there are some ppl who take on a debt with the the thought that they won't have ne problem paying it. then something happens like they lose a job, or a tragedy happens in the family. something happens. and a lot of collectors get nasty and harass ppl. when they work with you, they are cool, but when they call right off the bat and start jumping your azz that's when ppl get rude with them. |

People dont like collectors calling their house and bringing up their debts. Trust me, we are all aware of what we owe. Its gets very stressful when you have a debt colector calling your house to get money that you just dont have. And please stop criticizing people who have money problems. Some people arent good with money but some people did have the ability to pay their loans credit cards etc and circumstances change. Divorce, loss of employment, etc cause alot of problems. People are having a hard time keeping up with necessities like rent and food never mind paying off other debts. The added stress of someone hounding you isnt helping. |

The way I feel about Debt collection is, I'll pay when I get the money. Calling and pestering me every week or every day is not going to put the money in my pocket or yours any quicker. |

Unfortunately...the dept collectors are the end of the line for most people of their stress level...giving the collector the shitty end of the deal too ...people make mistakes |

They take it personal and are already feeling insecure do to the nature of the bad debt. It may be their fault or it could be a result of conditions that were somewhat beyond their control. Anyone could end up bankrupt given certain situations. That shouldn't be confused with fiscal irresponsibleness however. |

There you go, using common sense and responsibility again.
However, some collectors or devoid of people skills and tact - these are the ones that most people despise. |

Collection agencies are rude and aggressive but that is understandable because they deal with deadbeats all day. People are irresponsible and then don't want to face the consequences of their own choices. I'd actually like to see some kind of debt prison for people who declare bankruptcy. |

Totally agree. Debt collectors are people too...often having to do the job for very little money just to avoid taking out loans themselves! |
|

Because they're deadbeats and want to make the collector feel guilty so they can get away with not paying. |
