Cash machines need to be filled by hand. By filling it with five pound notes it will need to be filled twice as regularly as when filled with tens. This is extra labour and effectively costs the banks more money.
This is one of the main reasons why there is a shortage of fives in circulation. When you ask for cash at the counter you normally request 'tens and twenties', so very few new ones make it into circulation. |

once every one has donr telling you it is about space (which it might be partially) it is probably more about the fact that the Bank of england intends to replace the £5 note with a £5 coin before long........................... |

Because they want you to spend more money.
If you had the option to get £5 out of a machine then your would only get £5 out when you need it and that means if you can't get out £5 but only £10 your more likely to spend it as its in your wallet / purse.
What I normally do is get £10 out and buy what I need and then pay in £5 in to my bank. That way your not likely to spend it if its in the bank.
ADDITIONAL:
Funny, I never get the option to just draw out £5 when I use a Barclays or Lloyds cash machine. Where are these machines? |
