Why do I keep getting emails from Africa from people that I don't know regarding huge inheritances?

Ginger/Virginia
This is a well-known scam (Nigerian letters), but some people still fall for it. They end up losing their money.
The reason there is so much of it is because they are hard to track down and apparently they are making money from it.
Here's an explanation from the U.S. Secret Service:

I agree with the others... this is a scam... a good idea is to check www.snopes.com Urban Legends page with a few keywords and often there are reports of hoaxes and scams.

If you can, report this email as spam to your email provider so the address will be blocked in the future.

They are phishing for naive, gullible people who will bite
at the idea of "free" money and are stupid enough to
send them their "finder" fee or whatever they call it.
Once they get your cash, that's it. You are left feeling
the fool.

yahweh550
The same thing happens to me.

A big scram!

Report them to your provider.

It's a scam that they use to get your bank information and then they use it to bankrupt you or at least take all your money... Dateline did a piece on that a while back... Once the money is gone they can't get it back. Avoid these e-mails. Do not respond to them.

umkatiba
It's spam. These e-mails are notorious con attempts that have even been documented by the FBI. Most of the time you will notice discrepancies in the story that they tell and sometimes the country or position of the father or husband will change, but ultimately, it's the same thing. Someone who used to be high up in the government obtained an obscene amount of money and placed it in an account and then died following a coup or whatever. At any rate, the author of the email alleges that they cannot access the account for whatever legal reasons and that someone from outside the country must access it. If you help to retrieve the monies and give it to him, he pledges to give you 10% or 20% or whatever.
A colleague of mine who worked at the FBI told me once that there were at least two people who actually responded to these types of email cons. They even went so far as to travel to the country and were met at the airport by the authors of the email, who then kidnapped them, robbed them of all cash, valuables and their American passports and left them in the middle of nowhere. When the travelers reported the incident to the police, they were informed that the whole story was a hoax and told them to contact the US Embassy for help getting home.

Ultimately, remember the old adage: If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

This type of email has been documented on several urban legend breaker websites like snopes.com and breakthechain.org.

Its a scam, my dad got robbed from it. You can report e-mails like that to the FBI and they try to track the people down.

bella45
