Why do banks rip so many people off?
Surely the whole borrowing, lending mortgage thing is just soooooooooooooo naughty. What do they spend our money on?What do they invest in?Why isnt it illegal.Do banks run the world or the people who own the banks?

You could just as easily put your money under your mattress - you don't HAVE to use banks. You don't earn interest under your mattress and banks are safer than mattresses right?

That's like saying why do you pay £50 for a pair of Nike shoes that only cost £5 to make? It's business - that's how the world goes around these days. Someone provides a product or service to you, and in return they make money of their own.

Banks give you a percentage of the profits they earn from investing your money. So what are you crying about? Have a look around there are some better deals than others.

They are providing you with a service - no matter what you're using them for.

banks are like any other businesses that run to earn profits. If you run a business, what is your intention? Of course, to earn profits

have you looked at the disclosure forms we already have?

APRs are plainly shown. the monthly PI payment is plainly shown. What else should be required?

would you have the bank hold people's hands and build their entire budget for them?

get some facts. find out what proportion of troubled loans did not have full income disclosure or proof ["liar loans"]. find out what proportion did and the payments were more than anyone could reasonably have hoped to make. find out what proportion weren't even for primary residences, but were people speculating on housing prices continuing to go up.

did you know that in California, the "buyer" isn't legally liable for the loan balance if the house's value goes down and he just walks away from it? [unless he refi'd or used a second -- and then only the refi or second has full responsibility]. no personal liability makes it real easy to speculate -- just put down a minimal $20k or so to control $600k "worth" of house. If it goes up, you make a killing. If it goes down, you walk away and stick the bank with the loss -- your maximum loss is $20k.

***
fearless forecast -- after the CA market hits bottom in about 2010, mortgages will, once again, be available on "good" terms in CA. those terms will be minimum 20% down and if that means minorites can't buy -- tough! there are no private secondary market buyers for CA mortgages now and won't be with less than 20% down. [government backed buyers still exist -- and they're going to take a big bath as well.]

Banks do in fact have a lot of power and they are (make no mistake) businesses, why would anyone hold onto your money for free?

if loan sharks and pay day loans were better, banks would be out of business

simplesimon
.... No.

It is not your god given right to be able to borrow money. Banks have large costs for providing the services they do - they employee hundreds of thousands of people. Lending costs are worked out by free market principals - which in theory makes them about as fair as they can be.

Are you in the UK? If so, did you know that in most countries around the world you are charged for having a current account. We have a relatively good deal here because banking is free!

There's nothing naughty about mortgages. They serve a valuable function. What's naughty is people who borrow more than they can afford.

Borrowing for a mortgage naughty ?
Right . . . because nearly everyone has the cash to buy a house and are just being tricked into borrowing it !

What are you , like 12 years old or something ?
Welcome to the adult planet where mommy & daddy are Not around to give you a fat allowance .

ok yes i work for a bank, we're a business not a charity.
find me another high profile industry where basics equivalent to current accounts, atm use, statements, cheques etc are free - you know any free solicitors or accountants providing their professional services for free?
most branches are leased, call centres, staff, utilities, maintanence contracts inc atms, service contracts including deliveries of cash all cost money. the credit interest we pay on savings and investments has to be raised somewhere.
the majority of pension funds are heavily invested in banks and insurance companies - your pension may not exist if we're not successful.
uk no longer has a manufacturing industry - we're dependant upon services and banking.
if you want free banking try the post office - yeah they closing branches and don't offer any useful services like overdrafts, financial advise or protection planning; but if you want to pay cheap you get cheap.
maybe a return to bartering the vegetables you grow in your garden would suit some but how would you buy anything on ebay?
save a bit, borrow a bit, current accounts kept within limits and i pretty much get all my banking for free - what's the ripoff?

Join a credit union. I have not dealt with a bank in over 25 years outside of getting a mortgage. Credit Unions have lower fees and are basically owned by the membership. Nowadays almost everyone meets the criteria to join some credit union. I know the one I do business with allows my relatives to join. Banks are a ripoff. You are paying all those fees and ridiculous nickel and dime nonsense to give the corporate officers better "golden parachutes" when they get kicked to the curb.

Banks are thieves! Mine just charged me £90 for going overdrawn! The fact is we have to have a bank account these days, there is no getting around it, surely a service that we have no choice in having should be free? They are just legal loan sharks!
