Many people have voids in their life and need to buy things to make them happy. That is the culture created in the US. To keep up with the Joneses. Many people are just wired that way, to be envious and to want more than someone else - jealousy. So advertising feeds into that. If one is not self confident you fall into the trap that to be successful you need the trappings of life. People generally do this all their live and then late in life when their health is fading they will see that none of this matters and just health and social connections and a basic standard of living with enough wages to allow you personal freedom is good enough. MOst of the good things in life are free or near free, but that would not feed corporate coffers so we are sold to feel good you need to buy $40 T shirts, $400 jackets, a new car every 3 years and if you live in a trashy 1500 sq foot home you are poor; 3500+ sq feet is what successful people live in.
So all these people spend every day to buy these things and they will never retire and be stuck paying for their debts by working til the day they drop as a Walmart shopper wondering why they wasted all that money on things that truly have no real value excep to impress other people. I mean, does a Coach bag have any value other than to show off? A $12 purse can do the same thing. It's all about appearances as we are a superficial culture. We judge on appearance. |

It's too bad that you can't teach them your philosophy! |

Some do it because they're bored, others because they lack common sense, lots of reasons. If you are happy with your life, that's good. |

I have wondered how poor people have so many luxuries -- the latest, best, and most expensive of eveything when many people, who are very well off financially, say no and use tremendous self discipline when purchasing items. I guess it comes from habit and from what they learned as children. Very often, wealthy people have money because they learn to save and sacrifice. People without money think of every excuse to buy things they cannot afford. I do not keep credit card companies in business because I pay all of my bills on time and sleep very well at night. |

Hi,
congratulations! I live frugally but I have a car, I only by end of
season clearance and don't need alot either. The problem
is everyone is always trying to be one up on somebody else.
I don't buy into the materialistic stuff. |

john u asked two questions one -- i think the biggest problem is "keeping up with the jones" if people would just live a simple life they would be rich in more ways than one -- but they have to try to one up everything 2) no i used too bike and run every day -- but my body always told me when i needed to eat more -- i do not believe you can wear out the body i am 68 i still bike and job but at much slower pace!!! hang in there and have a good life!!! speaking of biking i just wish we had more bike trails through out the cities and between towns!!! |

Many people do not grow up with good role models for managing money. If their parents cannot manage money, or do not have the ability to teach money management to their children (Not everyone is good at imparting their knowledge) the children struggle their way through blindly as young adults. Money management is not routinely and consistently taught in school either. Many people have considerable difficulty with even basic math, just as some people cannot spell very well. So I think that often times young people are just not well prepared for every day life as a young adult, but yet can be doctors or physics majors. You are lucky to have learned the value of thriftiness. |

That's great, it's called contentment, one of the things that is missing from the materialistic society. You may not be a millionaire but you live happier than them. Good for you....Don't forget to tithe. |

some people spend money they don't have to feel a void in their life. they are hoping the things will make them happy. at the end things don't make you happy. |
