returnofkarlos | Why does my bank always make me feel like a liar and a criminal? |
I phoned to cancel a direct debit weeks ago but they didnt do that and then had the cheek to charge me for it...I only noticed today so I went in to get MY money back...they virtually called me a liar and looked at me like I was desperate because my balance is low in that account due to their **** rates! is anyone else with the coventry building society or does anyone else get this shoddy treatment? |

They CHARGED you to cancel a direct debit? Open an account with another bank I say. |

You are not the only one! Banks are thieves dressed in jackets. I had a direct debit that went on for months after I cancelled it (over the phone), I then received a letter from the bank saying that I was over the limit by more than £500! Not only did they carried on paying the direct debit but once the money wasn't in the account, they charged me for unathorised fees and then interest on them as well!!!! I didn't pay them a penny and changed banks, then used a solicitor to clear my name.
They make people feel as if they are doing us a favour, they keep fogetting that it is because of us that they have a job. |

I have learned like you the hard way. Banking + phone + disaster. I always do my bank business in person and get a receipt for everything I do. Take it as a lesson learned and do it the other way next time. You will have a much better weekend if you let it go now. |

First - banks do not trust anyone and the larger banks will do anything to get a penny out of their customers. They even make interest on the funds in your deposit account over night (called prime rate.) The longer they have your deposits the more they make. They can legally loan 6 times their funds on deposit.
Shop for the best deal with a bank. Drop your current bank and by all means do everything with a bank in writing. |

Barclays are bloody worse mate |

Yep, I know exactly what you mean. I get charged an overdraft fee for their screw ups and they always make it a point, to point that out when I call for something. They make me feel so low. I agree with the first guy, a CREDIT UNION is so much better. I think I am switching over. |

I can absolutely relate. My husband had this problem for many years, mostly because of his appearance as a laborer & the fact that he only kept a small amount of money at the bank.
The fact is, regardless of how low your account gets, in reality you are giving the bank a free loan by placing your money with them, which is more than they will ever do for you. You are a customer, & you need to remind them of that.
Remind them of how long you have been keeping your money with them. You have trusted them with your finances & you should tolerate nothing less than the utmost courtesy & respect.
You have to politely, but bluntly put them in their place. If they have a problem with that, kindly remind them that the banks are popping up on every corner like gas stations & you can always take your money elsewhere.
Good luck, man. |

You know, you can always change banks. I changed 4 times last year til I found the one I like. |

Everyone. They're rude. But, you have rights. Stick to your guns. Speak to the right person. You should be able to put a Stop Payment or fill out an unauthorized debit form to stop it. If you have signed something that gave the deductor the right to make the deduction at some point. You may not get some or all of it back. Tell the bank you don't authorize it anymore or didn't authorize it in the first place. You must be honest because they will have records of it or the direct debitor will have records of your authorization if you gave it. If not it's fraud/forgery. If the bank doesn't help, withdraw your funds so they can't get it. If you have direct deposit, contact the depositor and have them issue checks or give them a new account in which to deposit your funds. Go to the Banks Legal Dept. Via their 1-800#. |

They probably got mad because you do not fill there pockets enough. That's what most banks look for. If you had a higher balance I bet they would of been sorry |

Dude - I can SO relate. Banks are a business. There are there to make money. They will **** right on you and not care. You have to STAY on top of your game with them nonstop and if you goof -- you're gonna have to pay. If THEY goof you have to nail them on it too becasue they will NEVER admit it. I look at my balance EVERYDAY and make them make notes in my account when I call -- I'm nice when I call -- but I hold them to things (like the notes). Sometimes the direct debits can take a few billing cycles to stop taking cash from your accont -- legally you are still resonsible and it SUCKS. But - the only way around it is to NEVER allow a direct debit. I have a gym take 20 out of my account for SIX months after I told the bank to stop... you just have to keep calling and make sure you have the finds in there. I know man -- it sucks ***. |
