ms-mayhem | Why have them? |
Pennies I mean.
You cannot really buy anything for a penny nowadays so why are they still around?
Is it so that we get change from all those shops that try to fool us?
You know,... the ones that say:
"BARGAIN! UNDER £5.00!" and there it is, the £4.99p price tag! Additional Details Chokkamokka why don't you just go and crawl back under your stone. |

You're completey right.
But that 99p is an interesting psychological phenomenon. I remember talking to a guy that sold washing machines etc., and he told me that he hears people in his shop, who are looking at something for £399.99 saying "that's not bad for 300 quid"!!
Personally, I always round it up, but as long as there are people that don't, the shops will keep inflicting that 99p on us.
My handbag is always heaving with 1p and 2ps, though.
Remember half pennies? Sadly, I'm old enough to. |

just so you can pay an exact amount if something is $5.52 then you have to have pennies to get to the exact amount... |

I dunno...I guess so you have exact change... and can pay for things exactly... and they're a pretty color! |

I heard they were going to get rid of them and have the smallest currency as 5p. There were too many pennies being thrown away, on the ground, in the bin etc. If you get a build-up, take them to a bank, or the machines they have in supermarkets (although that costs you a bit).
Oh Lailaa, the £ is the symbol for Pound sterling! the Euro isn't used in the UK (and hopefully never will be!) |

Okay if you don't have pennies, things just get rounded up like here in Australia. The rounding only occurs on the final total of the bill, but I can say sometimes buying things separately can save pennies, but who really does this.
For example. I chocolate bar costs $1.02. It would be rounded to $1.00. I buy two of them separately it costs me $2.00. If I buy them together it would cost $2.05. |

they are just something to put in your change bottle if you have one! |

It's useful when you need change for things you buy. Otherwise, the shops would all have to round up their prices to the nearest pound...think of the inflation that would result. |
