Yes, the cost of living has gone up.

Utilities have shot through the roof which has driven up the cost of food, clothing and everything else.

While salaries have remained stagnant (or even gone down).

Welcome to the new world order.

The reason is simple. You live right up to, or beyond your means.
"Living Basically" is a relative term. If you consider having those added extras like an iPod, 235 channels of high def cable, PlayStation, satellite radio or having a top of the line cell phone living basically then it's time for a reality check. These are things you should consider luxuries instead of necessities.
If you're strapped for cash, consider a roommate or moving to a less expensive area or adding more hours to your work schedule. This might not sound like something you want to do but if your salary can't support your lifestyle, you need to adjust one of them.

Welcome to reality...

Welcome to modern life. I used to live like that and it really got me down. Now I live with my girlfriend its much better. I have more spare cash. Unfortunately it took many years to get here, i finally am earning decent money.

Keep working hard and things will sort themselves out.

Since you do in fact earn money (at least you should since you are employed), the answer would probably be because you spend all you money, and if there is debt, you spend some of other people's money also. Perhaps a new job and/ or altering your definition of a "decent car" would be good for you.

look at what you are paying out that you dont need to ie sky tv,,,,,,,if you dont use all that hot water turn it of just heat what you need ,,do you buy too many shoes ect,,,,,if need be write it all down what you have coming in and going out ,,,this way you will be able to see better what you can do with out ,,,or what you could do with paying off to free up more cash ,,,if you tend to buy a lot of pits and peices it will soon eat up your money ,,,if you buy lunch at work ,,take sandwiches instead as this will be cheaper ,,,i hope this gives you and idea how to start to see where your money just might be going ,al the best kat

I am more critical than some people during those disturbing times of economic crisis. Try living on 30 hours per week during the Winter? I would suggest buying a good used car and driving it into the ground or as long as you can. Limit spending by living in complete seclusion and with cheap hobbies, no family or sex. Poor people should refrain from sexual activity. Find a form of exercise that totally drains the will out of your body. Take the punishment and eat less if you have to. I was starved off a few times and it changed my way of thinking. The shame hangs on for years.

yep tour right petrol gas electric counciltax

You don't have money, because you spend first, and there is nothing to save after that. You have to save FIRST and, what is left, you spend. It looks like you need some financial planning!!

well, i think if u want that decent car, i think you need to put yourself on a budget and keep track of your spending. once you know how much ur spending it and what on, find ways of cutting costs and deciding whether you actually need that item or not.

sometimes it is as basic as reevaluating what you are doing; do you need cable? grocery is a big area where money flies ; clip coupons, shop at discount store ; do you eat out? take out or in? utilities - be more observant for waste; use clothesline instead of dryer , shut off lights; change to cost effective bulbs; look for a cheaper rent? ; take in a roomate? shop for cheaper car insurance; buy coffee out everyday? all these things add up in a course of a year; perhaps you need to brush up on your resume and search for a better paying job for 5 days; I found a job (took a while) more pay , insurance paid for 4 day work week with all holidays and 3 week vacation but I had to shop around for a while - they are there ; need to be patient, ready and look - good luck

Very simple reason: You're spending more than you earn.

Keep a diary of every penny you spend for a month. If you're like most folks, you'll be shocked at how much you waste.

treasuretrooper pays you to do surveys and you work hard at it (about a half hour a night) you can easily make over $100 a month to add some extra income.

It's a combination of many factors. The keyword to your question is "live basically." If you are paying high rent, have alot of credit cards to pay, have all of the cable channels and cell phone, go out to eat frequently, buy elaborate gifts, and that kind of thing the $20 here and $10 there might just buy you the decent car you'd like to have. Consider increasing income or decreasing your spending by looking at value rather than cost. You may find your budget will allow you to pursue all your goals but you have to prioritize them to live within your means.
