Because we dont actually produce anything anymore, so nearly everything we buy is imported from outside the UK and we have a smaller population than larger countries to draw tax from and a higher standard of living. |

Because the climate is good, even though we like to complain about it, so lots of people want to live on a small island. That means our housing prices are extremely high both because rich foreigners come here to buy them and locals have to buy to live where things are familiar to them.
If housing prices are high it affects the price of everything else. Add that to wanting to be 'green' and voting for high taxes on transportation fuels and there is no avoiding high prices for just about everything.
Look at it this way, if you live here, at least if you have a job, the relative cost of your food is likely to be less than it would be elsewhere because most people in most places, however unfortunate, pay much the same for food.

because our economy is actually falling at the moment. prices have to rise to counterbalance the costs of importing products or raw materials to sell the final produce at extortionate prices only for them to be below standard. |

I don't live in the UK, but would imagine that heavy taxes may have a part to play since you are paying the salaries of the monarch in addition to your government which may had spent a lot of money on things like defence as well as others to deter terrorists, etc.
Furthermore most of the things you used are imported. |
