Why is the cost of living so damn expensive?
my mom told me that back in the day she was able to afford a two bedroom apartment and pay all of her bills making $86 a week. Here i am making $300 a week and i cant even afford to live in a studio or one bedroom apartment. What the hell is wrong with this picture? Is this the reason why so many high school grads still live with their parents?

Rising gas prices, glut of cheap labor, lagging minimum wage... I'm a college grad and could not afford to live on my salary which is why I'm in grad school now.

You should look into getting a specialized tech degree from your local community college. In a year, you could be making a lot more money as an EMT, auto mechanic, etc. Or you could just go back to school.

welcome to the real world....

back in 1964 one could make it on 50 dollars a week...

now make a grand a week retired and wonder why it takes so much to do nothing.

Because of the growing economy.

i bet your mom didn't have to have all the new fangled gadgets out there either....no computers..cellphones...cable tv...big TV's to watch...takes more energy to support all this....cars aren't as cheap as they use to be and the gas to fill em up is big business nowadays ..it's all in the supply and demand...and we demand more and more...and I guess where you live makes a huge difference.....my sister in N.Y. paid three times the amount for a older 2 bedroom 1 bath house on what they call an oversized lot...she has a 20 foot backyard :o( as i paid for a New 3 bedroom 2 bath house on an acre of land here in texas

I so agree with you and I don't understand it either.

My parents owned a home and usually at least 2 cars, we owned a large trailer for camping and a membership in a campground, a boat, a satellite dish when they first came out, 3 tvs in the house, and I had a car as well at 16. We had a lot of things, maybe not the newest and best, but WAY more than people have nowadays on 2 incomes. AND my parents were a lot older and retired when I was like 12, and my mother never did work since I was 3 yrs old. HOW DID THEY DO THIS?? No savings to speak of, my mother on disability until my father retired. HOW is what I want to know, when me and my husband work full time and find a huge strugle to pay for our home, 1 small car payment, and regular bills. We wonder how we will buy groceries on some weeks. I just don't get why the cost of living is so out of range with the salaries.

I used my example because someone above mentioned new gadgets and stuff, but we ALWAYS were one of the first to get things like that, and budgeting, which my mother was very good at, but we never really did without.

So if anyone knows a really good answer, they should put it because so far, the answers don't help.

Yes. The cost of living keeps going up at an almost alarming rate while wages continue to decrease in this country because of outsourcing jobs to different countries. Thank our wonderful Republican government for this!

property has become a rip off these days. also inflation kicks in every year. the best thing to do is rent out a place with some friends.

I guess I don't think it is expensive. I am a smart shopper and save thousands where others spend thousands. I even have friends and family schedule shopping with me for I save them a ton of money. Not sure why others spend so much but it is all about choices. We wake up each day with basically the same choices to make, we simply make different ones.

Happy Spending ! : )

?
it is a scheme by those in power to keep us under control.
,go live in mexico .life is a lot cheaper there ,but so are the wages unfortunately
we can never win

Josh
Because everything (In term of price) is keep on raise. Including petrol. That why everything is expensive now a days.

Well, for one thing, the currency value has changed since then. Now money is worth less than it was b4, since there's so much more of it, so the prices are raised (for example, wat was 10 cents b4 mite now be a dollar or two). And for another thing, w/ so many damn humans on the planet (and the population keeps on increasing), the demand for a place to live is much much higher. Sure, they can cut down more trees and destroy more habitats to make more houses for us, but the homes are more expensive now as the demand is higher. They can afford to make the rent high, as ppl are desperate for a place to live. Plus, mb ur area is popular, w/ a nice climate or job opportunities or sumthing. Living w/ ur parents cuts down on rent costs, as ur family's only paying for one home instead of 2.

compare the cost of living to the price of dying

$300/week averages to $1300/month. I'm presuming that's
gross pay, not net. ouch!
[300 * 52 / 12, in case you couldn't figure it out or thought it should be 1200).

but you can get by. you just have to decide what is important and worth spending your money on. learn what a budget is and how to use one. move to a city with a lower cost of living. the thing is, you don't want to live the rest of your life that way, so make plans to improve your earning potential. college is a good idea. figure out what you want to do. if a 4 year degree is needed, start at a community college. make a plan for your life. another option might be the military, but if you're not very bright, you'll start at the lowest paygrade, but at least you won't be "concerned" about housing and meals.
