ukchanak | Why is there strange extra cash in my bank account? |
For the past year and a half, my bank account has had an extra $150 in it that I cannot account for. Just now, I've accounted for all expenses, balanced the books, and everything has cleared. As of this moment I have an extra $320 in my bank account I *should not have*.
Does anyone know WHY this might have happened, and what to do? The bank doesn't care. They've said flat out they don't have any way to check it, and they don't really worry about it, but it bothers me tremendously. It's been helpful, but what happens if we start to rely on it and it suddenly vanishes? Also, any suggestions on how to fix this, or discover the issue? Additional Details I actually balance every month, and I've never seen a strange credit to the account. It's a checking account, with no interest.
I've not checked the bank's math myself, but considering it's been going on for over a year, I find it hard to believe. And I don't think it's that we forgot deposits. we're more likely to forget expenditures.
However, it's a good idea that we might get into trouble for this. I'll have to look into it. |

If the bank doesn't care and you feel nervous about it, donate it to charity. Then you don't have to worry about depending on it and someone who really needs it gets it. |

First get it in writing from the bank that they don't care. That absolves you of Civil and Criminal Liability if the depositor of the money complains. And, if there is a difficulty, the Bank WILL try to blame you. Especially if it's Bank of America. They never accept responsibility for anything.
Second, your statement should show you when and where the strange deposits were made. That will give you a start in tracking down the source of the funds. |

Well i don't know if i would want to keep my money there since the bank doesn't care. Have you checked the deposits and everything? I wouldn't spend it though because they may come back after they figure out it's not supposed to be there. |

Well, to be honest with you, balancing your check book ONCE A MONTH, is really not enough. The extra money could be some transaction that you forgot to record. Or simple the banks mistake. I am NOT sure why you have not try to contact the bank and help you out on this. You also didn't state how you balance your check book, did you just simply accumulate all reciepts and entered them once a month and try to balance your check book that way? The tru balancing of a check book is also balance the transaction and amount to your BANK STATEMENT. If you have not done so, please do and also try to balance your check book as often as you can. Definitely write down all transaction as the occur and then balance it to your bank statement. If you did accounted interests (if this is a interest baring account), and there are still extra money, you will need to go to the bank and ask someone to help you out by sitting down with you and see what is going on. And if the money is NOT yours, don't even spend it, NOT even donating it. The bank will need to help you out and see what happen and many they can find if the bank made couple mistakes on your account by deposit other people's money into your account. Tellers are human, and many the other cusomters put down wrong account number (which happen to be yours) when they made the deposit. Good luck! |

easy.
#! is that u wrote a check someone didnt cash, or that the bank cleared for the wrong amount. Your diff isnt divisible by 9, so i wouldnt say that, but 2x check.
Do you get direct deposit? Did u verify all of these?
80-90? of the time, if u are out of balance, its your fault. Seriously.
Bank, maybe 15-20% of the time. |

As one person put it another way, you probably just goofed up in your balancing. You might have subtracted when you should have been adding. And then made the same mistake later on. Do you use an adding machine with paper to balance, or just a simple, no paper, calculator. If you don't use paper to review the list of entries, it's real easy to add when you meant to subtract and vice versa. Check your 75 dollar entries, and then later it would have been an 85 dollar entry mistake. |

"The bank doesn't care. They've said flat out they don't have any way to check it, and they don't really worry about it, but it bothers me tremendously."
This doesn't surprise me... but I am very surprised you still keep your money there. Find another bank. |

I agree w E D.
But do you have a savings account?
maybe its intrest? |

You may have a credit from Blockbuster. If it is and automatic draft it may be a paycheck bonus. Get your bank records and look carefully. |

DONT TOUCH IT! go to the bank and tell them because here in the UK, if you touch the money which has been acciendly put in ur bank account. you can get 5 years in prision even if it is £1. but i dont know in the US |

bonus for you! I'd leave it there and inquire about statute of limitations. If, say, 2 years goes by, and it has not been corrected, move it to a savings acct or a CD... Imagine... a retirement fund, founded solely on "found" money... sweet... |

Do you balance your checkbook every month? I do--to the penny--I'm kind of anal that way, so if there are any discrepincies I know right away. If you do not balance the checkbook every month, it will probably be hard to figure out. Could be that you wrote something down twice as a debit. If the bank doesn't care--consider it your good fortune, but I would recommend that you start balancing your checkbook so it does not get you the other way one of these days. It is always nicer to have more in the account than you think than less!! Believe me-I know from experience:(> |

Is it possible you've gained interest on the money in the account? Check your bank statements and see if you gained any and how much. If this isn't the case I would speak to a manager at your bank, it is their priority to maintain accounts correctly and if there is a mess up they need to know about it as it can also cause them trouble in the long run not just yourself. Good luck. |

If you are balancing your statements on a monthly basis, you would see exactly when and how it appears. That is basic personal financial management. |
