Why shouldn't I clear my bank account and put it under my mattress?
At least it will be safe there.

First. you're gonna worry yourself to death. Second, you're insured up to $100,000 by FDIC. Oh, and suppose you have a fire and you burn the money that's hidden under the mattress ? The magic word is "RELAX".

security is probably the only reason, but there is even disadvantages there.

Freakin' Sweet!
Because that is about as silly as leaving it on the front porch.

I have been robbed, and you are to NEVER EVER put money under a mattress. That's one of the first places burglars look to see a stash of cash. That and dresser drawers, jewelry boxes and the like. Those are common places to think you are stashing cash, but burglars know that is the first place to look!

Thankfully, I DID NOT do this, but my bedroom was completely torn apart.

In the U.K. your money is safe up to £30,000, if you have more then spread it over different banks.

Because it will get stolen, of course,

If you feel you must be in cash, then put it in a safe deposit box.

However, be aware that banks must report cash transactions over $10,000 to the IRS. This is not attention you want to attract.

What coz houses dont get burgled?

Also you wont get interest paid on it and with inflation running at nearly 5% your money will be worth less next year than it is now.

burglary, house fire, flooding, weevils eating it, etc. etc.

Because the default insurance for the bank comes free with the account, and will cover you for $100,000 or £35,000, while unless you pay a lot of money, your household contents insurance will pay out at most £1000 or $1000 for stolen or destroyed cash, and you will have to pay the excess (deductible in america)

If you had 50k hidden in a hole a year ago and 50k in a 401k plan, how much would you have in each one today? Answer: 50k in the hole and 46k in the 401 plan. True story from two of my friends.
