kenneth h | Why to use a debit card as a credit card ? |
How and why ? |

first of all people always misunderstand. a debit card is not a credit card. you can not uses it unless you have the money in your account. if you did, it would be like writing a bad check. people always come in and don't understand why they have fees on their accounts. it is not like credit cards where you buy now and pay later. basically all a debit card is is a safer, faster way to pay for things. when you use it at a store or an atm machine, the money is instantly withdrawn from your checking account. many people get them selves into trouble with these. its so easy to just swipe the card and pay for things and for get to put it in your ledger. so make sure you keep track so you don't over draw your account... also there is no real difference between using it as credit or debit on the machines. debit just clears your account faster than credit does. |

just press cancel on those machine things at the store then credit. or just credit some machines have just credit.
why? because for some banks (mine included) if you use debit anywhere other than their atm they charge you anywhere from .50 to 1.00 |

I used to sell merchant services so here is business answer to your question:
Merchants are charged a flat fee for pin based debit purchases.
Merchants are charged a percentage of the total transaction for credit based purchases.
Typically, banks make more money on the % based purchases than they do on the debit charges. This is why many banks offer rewards/points to consumers who use their debit card as a credit card purchase.
A debit based purchase, when the consumer entered a pin is very difficult to challenge, so it offers more protection to the merchant.
Credit based purchases can be challenged up to a year after puchase as not yours, so there is less protection to the merchant.
That said, debit cards do not offer the same protection to the consumer in terms of unauthorized use.
From a consumer perspective, the only real reason to use credit over debit is if your bank offers some kind of rewards program |

it takes a little while longer for the store to take out the money from your account.
so if you're low on money in your account but your payday is within the next 2 days, use credit and you won't overdraft.
that's what i do. when i need to that is. |

It's up to the issuing bank. My bank gives me 0.5% cash back when I choose 'credit' instead of 'debit'. Check how your bank handles the transactions, and use the method that benefits you best. |

press credit instead of debit on machine... some banks charge fees for using as debit |

a debit card can be used as a credit card, but its not quite the same, its just for if a store doesnt have a pin pad so you can put in your pin number...then the transaction is run as a "credit" but the money comes from your bank account....you still can not overdraw your account unless you have overdraft protection. |

If run as a credit, you get consumer protections under the VISA or MASTERCARD logo. With a debit, I don't think that's the case. You're protected by bank policy. I wouldn't trust that. |

I understand that some merchants charge a fee for debit cards, so use it as a credit card to avoid the fees. |

if you use debit at least at my bank they charge a fee if i use credit no fee |

Why? Because you might want to buy something on line from a site that only accepts credit cards.
How? Just use the card as if it were a credit card -- enter the number, expiration date, billing information, and security code when asked. |

With a debit card you can spend what you have in account.
With a credit card you have to pay out the amount due. |
