I found HSBC very helpful (Live in England)

I have found Royal BAnk of Scotland to be good, but not a lot of branches.

Nationwide has lower charges than most.

Abbey let me open an account. They don't mind what your credit history is, as long as you don't owe it to them.

You can get what's known as a "simple" account at the Post Office and most banks. That'll take wages, has no overdraft facility but you can withdraw from cash machines. No debit card facilities though.
