Michelle B | Will I get in trouble ? |
I signed up to a online company and I realized immediately it was a rip-off; I googled (I should have done that before signing up !) and I found a bunch of messages from people reporting the same rip-off; they also said they were charged not just once but many times. So, I got worried and I called the lost and stolen credit/debit card number to have my card blocked. The point is that I told them I had left the card unattended in the lockers room at the gym and that I had just noticed a transaction I didn't make. I said that to have a chance to be refunded. If my bank proceeds with an investigation to know more about this transaction, will they find out it came from my computer ? If the answer is yes, I won't ask to be refunded and I will consider myself lucky enough to have blocked the debit card in time.
PS I know it's bad to lie to your bank, but I think they can just reverse the charge. |

No you will not get in trouble and they will never find out. They have far more things to worry about. There is no way to track it to your computer by them. I could go into depth, but just don't worry. |

you could have called the bank and told them what happened they would have blocked it anyhow. so you call them back and tell them what happened and why and that you had to block it you just didnt' realize what was going on and you were going to buy and then decided it was scam. they will block and you will not get into trouble take care. |

Obtaining money by false pretense is the criminal charge.
You should have just told them what happened in the first place. |

isn't there a clause in the contract that allows you to cancel in an allotted amount of time...I probably would have done the same thing you did....just wait it out...I have cancelled my cards that really were lost and then used by someone and I had the charges reversed and I never got questioned about it...in these days you almost have to lie to get out of things because of all the frikking red tape...honey I have been there and done that and it is futile.... |

Be honest, not for the sake of a few dollars but the sake of your conscience. You'll feel better for it in the long run, and you leaned a valuable lesson. My theory is there is nothing bad in life, just good lessons. It cost you some money so you are more likely to remember it anyway! Then report the company and see if you can have something done about it, or tell the bank it wasn't your fault, they were dishonest and screwed you.
PS. If you explain to them exactly what happened, in person not over the phone, and you come across genuine and respectful, not suggesting anything, they very well might refund you anyway! |

you should have told them the truth from the beginning, but you will probably be okay because the web based company will more than likely NOT respond to the chargeback.... And there isn't really anyway for them to figure out where the charge was made, or whos computer so you are okay... |

Step 1: Contact the company that is charging you and request a refund.
Step 2: Write a request for refund from the company that is charging you and make a copy, then send the original to them via Certified mail. Keep any replies.
Step 3: If the company that is charging you refuses a refund, contact your credit card provider and file a dispute. you do not need to lie. Tell them you did not receive what you purchased, that you requested a refund and that your request was denied. |

I would be on the safe side and not distort the whole truth unless it's a last resort. You don't want to get caught in a small cover up lie and then have the bank make an even bigger deal out of it.
I'd take measures to get the refund using the Better Business Bureau or a state agency. Or through nagging the online company. Your chances would be nearly as great of getting the refund, only with 0% chance of getting in trouble with the bank. |

I don't think they'll dig that deep Next time. when on line you might try pre pay credit cards. |

no. i did that couple of times. they dont care, because they have insurance for that. So they dont loose anything. Plus by law the c.c company has the right to take funds. So you should be straight.
But remember you story and dont change it. B/c they will ask few times, but in diff. ways. |
