They will place a hold on it. $6,000.00 is a pretty big risk for any financial institution, unless you have a large business account. The amount of time for the hold depends on a few factors: location of the bank the check is written on, your bank history, etc. With that amount, expect a 7 to 11 business day hold.
Your best bet is take the check and your ID to the bank it's drawn off of, and get a cashier's check or cash for it. If you take a cashier's check, your bank may still put a hold on it, as cashier's checks and money orders are now the most counterfeited items. |

Why not withdraw funds directly from your account?
No one will cash a check that large without holding it against you bank account or verifying funds. |

Try cashing it at the bank it was drawn on. Make sure you bring ID. If it's out of state, it's going to be held by your bank if you deposit it. |

The only way you're going to get a bank to cash a personal check for that amount is to bring the check to the bank that it is issued from. They will check the balance on that account, and if there's enough in the account, they will cash it. Just make sure you bring a couple of forms of identification with you. |

Go to the bank on the check. They will cash it right away as long as the funds are in the account. |

Most banks will put a Reg CC hold on this check which means they will make the 1st $100 available on this check...then the 1st $4900 will be held for 5 business days and the last $1000 will be held for an additional 6-11 business days.
If you need the cash go to the bank the check is drawn on to cash it...if the funds are available in the writers account they will cash it for you with no hold. Do not take a cashiers check in lieu of a hold because you bank will still put a hold on the cashiers check due to all the fraud and scams out there right now (which is also the reason they will put the hold on in the 1st place). |

Well it really depends on if the person who wrote the check has a hold on it. Being that it is a personal check chances are there will be a hold on it. Also, sometimes banks will not put a hold on it if the person who wrote the check uses the same bank as you.
Goodluck! |

Take it to the bank that the check is issued from, if the funds are there they will cash it with proper ID. If you go to your bank and deposit they will put a hold on it until it clears, 2-3 business days. no not any back will cash it, to much of a risk. Go to the bank it is drawn against. |

The bank that issued it has to cash it. So if it's from Smith Savings Bank, you go to one of their branches. They can verify right away if it's good, and no time needed to clear it. |

If you take the check to the bank it was written on they will cash the check. For example, if the check is from Bank Of America go to the nearest Bank of America branch, walk in with your id and cash the check.
If you deposit the check at any bank other than the bank it was written on, they will put a hold until it clears. |

You're joking, right ? All banks will wait for any check to clear. It's not good business to throw away $6,000 ! |

They will put a hold on the check for 4-6 business days. However you should be able to write a check for your rent. Once a check is presented and accepted as payment the debt is considered paid as long as the check clears. There is no penalty for waiting for the check to clear. There can only be a penalty if the checks is dishonored. Deposit the money in the bank and write a check for your rent. |

Can you not get the money from your account? I think a bank would only clear that check, if it were taken to the same bank where you account resides. Even if it's taken to a different bank and deposited into someone else's account (whoever you're paying rent to) they will have to wait for it to clear before they get the full amount. |
