Will this happen to me?
Okay, I'm 15 years old and have huge goals for my self. I really want to be successful one day and I know with success comes work and I'm ready for that. I live in a upper middle class family I'm going to go to college I have close to straight A's 3.75 GPA....Anyways my main concern is I dont want to work at Wal-mart for the rest of my life or some crappy minimum wage job I want to get to the 100k+ level one day I know the likely hood of me making that right of college is slim to none, but one day I cant understand how I couldnt so any advice? How I can reach my goal maybe some success stories. Thanks!

This guy made me laugh you dont need high goals or help to become a walmart cart collector i'm practicaly a manager at my dads distrubution warehouse so Im already above that, but you can read what this guy said........."Wal-mart jobs are NOT crappy and MOST pay much better than minimum, at least when you consider the benefits package. If you apply yourself to the job, you could be a store manager within 10 years. I know people that started as cart collectors and were district managers in less time than that. However, the TONE of your question suggests to ME, that a crappy minimum wage job is more than you deserve."

Sometimes a young person has to work a "crappy minimum wage Wal-Mart" type job as a entry level introduction to the world of work and careers.

Life is a series of stepping stones. Just because at seventeen you are flipping burgers at McDonald's does not mean this is going to be your career.

Many young people work fast food, food service, and retail jobs because of their part time and flexible schedules.

As too college.....You can pick up valuable job skills at your local community college as well as picking up the transfer credits for a university degree.

Apply yourself and do the best you can and keep a POSITIVE attitude and you'll do fine!

Both my brother and mother started their own businesses and they achieved that kind of income, and more.

It's actually pretty rare for people working for other people, to make that kind of money, unless they bring a skill set highly in demand to the table.

So my recommendation to you is, choose a field highly in demand, or gear your education to help you start your own business.

The first thing you should do is talk to your counselor about which careers would put you where you want to be. Researching which colleges will help you the most is another important thing to do. Keeping up the good grades is a GREAT tool. Make sure you take your s.a.t.

There's a radio show I listen to which might provide inspiration, and advice on how to get the life you want. It's on from 3 pm - 8 pm PST Monday - Friday. http://cbsplayer.streamtheworld.com/index.php?CALLSIGN=KLSXFM

To answer your question, though, it doesn't sound like this will happen to you, but you might benefit from envisioning success rather than expecting to fail.

I think you can do it, always head towards your goals and dont let anything slow you down.

Actually, if you get a great job and a great career, that's only part of the picture. To succeed you need to invest, because if you don't, you won't have any income when you're too old and don't want to work.

A lot of people who work at crappy, low income jobs actually do pretty well, because they make good investments and know why they're working. I work a crappy factory job, but I've got two degrees from a prestigious university. I had fantastic grades and a good work ethic. I just choose to work at a factory because I found out the conditions in the fancy jobs were pretty awful, and I want quality of life, not heaps of money. They are not one and the same.

I recommend you start by going down to the library and getting out some books on personal finance. Read them. They'll explain how money and the economy works. Knowing that, you'll be able to make good financial decisions and not waste your money on stuff that will keep you poor, like car loans, credit cards, and 'new' stuff.

Seriously, you're 15. By the time you're 25, your whole outlook on life will probably have changed. If you save your money and invest it now, it'll have more time to work for you. So get a crappy job. Save and invest your money, and you'll probably be earning $100k from investments by the time you're ready to retire.

Work isn't everything. Who wants to spend all day at work? I just work so I can afford better investments. I agree with Steven F to some degree. Work is what you make it. Just because you work at a department store doesn't mean you're sub human. Just because you're a stockbroker or a QC doesn't mean you're better than anyone else. There are plenty of stockbrokers (I know a few myself) who don't have 2 cents to rub together, because they don't manage their money. It's not where or how you work that will make you successful. It's the investment choices you make. I know people on minimum wage who own 10 houses. One of them is 35 years old. It's all choice. Don't focus on school and work as the entire picture. Take some responsibility for your financial management, so you don't have to work so hard.

Best wishes

Stay in school and work hard. A large salary takes good grades as good grades are the key to getting into medical school, law school, etc. Get a college degree - it gives you the edge you need to succeed - if another applicant has all the same qualifications as you except for a college degree, who do you think will get the job? Also, expect to work hard for many years - you will probably start out in an entry level position and work your way up. Success does not come overnight.

In terms of material possessions, do not expect to start out with everything your parents have now. It takes a long time to accumulate nice things. You will appreciate what you do have when you get it if you have had to work for it.

Good luck.

After College...

Get a MBA and every Fortune 500 Company in the World will offer you at least $100,000.00 USD annually.

If you finish at the top of your class then they will offer you at least $200,000.00 USD annually.

Do not sign anything.

Hear my job offer first.

Keep my email address stored somewhere for a few years and drop me a line.

Wishful Spirit
Go to your local employment agency (government-run) and ask for some of their information on high-paying job trends. Most do research on that type of stuff and have some fact sheets you can look over. Then see if you can find people who work in those fields (perhaps through the guidance counselors at your school) and see if any of them are willing to let you sit down with them and talk about their jobs. Find out what it took those folks to get where they are, what their day-to-day life is like, what they do and do not like about their professions. This will help you figure out which one might be for you.

Get a book or two on pre-visualization. See yourself where you want to be and then head down that path.
