While they are good for quick transactions, I would go to a more comfortable location to do things like open accounts or do other serious banking activities. |

Wal-Mart's doing quite well with it, I'm sure. Just one less stop that people have to make. |

Since they are normally just a store front for cashing checks, making withdrawals and deposits, not a full service bank, it isn't any different from using the ATM, except you talk to a person instead of punching buttons that all the other shoppers can see. |

I've seen banking machines in grocery stores and used them but not any banking tellers. It would be convenient if there was banking in a grocery store besides just the machines and yes I would bank in a grocery store if possible! It could be a real time saver! However I wouldn't trust a Walmart to have a banking service. I heard Zellers is considering to add a banking service! I recently got my Hair trimmed at a Restaurant that had hair cutting service! That is unusual! so why not banking in grocery stores? |

If it's a regular bank that also has branches yes. If you mean the grocery stores on "banking" service (ie cashing checks, pull money from credit card) then no. |

In New York City, most of the Duane Reade pharmacies have ATMs in them. Lucky for me, the bank that put them there is the same branch that I use. I've used them several times with no problems. So to answer your Q - Yes, I would. |

Wow!! You have either the most eagerly answered question or the easiest to answer!!
There should be no problem with you using a branch bank at a supermarket. As others have already mentioned, they ARE a bank, just a separate office of that main bank. And everything you do there is governed by the same rules and regulations at a regular bank.
The question is of convenience. Women still do most of the shopping in American families. So if they can take care of several tasks at same time, then why not help themselves to it? That's why supermarkets have bakeries, because the old corner grocery store our great-grandfathes used to use only had simple basic products. You had to go to a different store for bread and baked goods. Today's big supermarket is a combination of all the old neighborhood stores from decades ago. And the big box stores of today are a continuation of a supermarket. That's why Target and Kmart have put in grocery sections, including frozen foods. If you're shopping at Target, why not be able to get a couple frozen dinners for tonight's meal? It's all a matter of convenience for the customer. To attract customers, you want to make the shopping a better choice for them.
I know how you feel. For several years, people have been paying bills online, but I have really hated doing that. I even hate to pay bills thru the mail. Because I want to know that the money is going directly to the company, rather than getting lost in the mail. I prejer and enjoy seeing real people when I do my own transactions.
However, I have become sold on direct deposit for my paycheck, because I have come to trust the system and it does work. But I still prefer to pay bills in person.
Most branch banks in supermarkets are for general use---cashing checks, changing funds, simple things like that. However, some supermarket banks also will handle loans, so they're becoming little more open to full banking. But still, I wouldn't go to a branch supermarket bank to buy a house. I'd still prefer and feel more comfortable going to a regualr bank location. There is indeed something with the identity and atmosphere of a regular bank which is comforting. Besides, regular banks have deposit boxes, not supermarket banks.
But otherwise, I wouldn't feel bad or funny about going to a supermarket to do your usual banking. You're just showing how easier it is in your life to get more things done at once......you talented person, that you are. |

From personal experience NO dont do it. Cub Foods, Cash Wise, WalMart they all have them. I have had a payrol check from my work(one of the three above) get lost after I deposited it and I was out $400 I actually had to get the check cancled and re writen to me. They are a joke actually. Again I wouldnt' use them. Stick with a decent FDIC ensured bank. |

Well I don't have a bank account but my parents do and they don't use the grocery store. They are afraid that people are looking at the ATM while they are completing a transaction. I sort of don't like the whole idea of it because I don't feel comfortable banking in such an open environment. |

Having a branch in a store is catering to people who want everything within easy access rather than driving to several places and wasting more time and gas.
It would all depend on who backs up the bank in the store. For example, Safeway has Wells Fargo ATMs in their stores and Wells Fargo is a stable bank. In Canada, Superstore (a big grocery store chain like Safeway) has "branches" of a bank called President's Choice Bank, which is just a low-cost version of one of the big national banks, so your deposits are safe and insured. I say "low-cost" because they offer lower fees on daily banking but you have to use the ATMs or the phone for most if not all of your banking.
As long as the "branch" in the store has some privacy, it really is no different than walking up to the teller with a line of people waiting behind you. |
