NEVER!!!!!!
There should never be anything shameful about a person's station in life!! Some of the most honorable humans on this planet don't know where their next meal is coming from! Good question! It provokes a true sentiment of the human condition!! Thanks. I hope you draw a wide range of thought here! I will be interested to check back on this one.

only if you are not doing what ever it is you can do 110%. If you believe you are on this planet for a reason, and you are directing yurself to that end, no reason for shame. But if all you do is sit around smoking dope,,,f you. |

No, I believe I currently live below the poverty line, already. With the way times are becoming, we are going to end up like old Russia, and be poverty stricken in many ways.Although I know it's not the place, but I blame the Democrats and NOT the Republicans. |

Personally, it would be difficult for me ONLY because I have been brainwashed to believe money can bring status and happiness..
The truth is, if you have the right values and morality, you can live below the poverty line and be happy..WITHOUT getting welfare and abusing the government assistance systems..
I actually know quite a few people who live in what society considers poverty..they do not get public assistance or welfare ( because they believe as long as they are healthy and able to work, they need to completly and honestly care for themselves ) ..
They actually live comfotably and are happy families.. they might not have every designer thing in the world, but they have the basics they need to live and are proud of every penny they earn... they are actually happier and more content with their lives than those who live well above the poverty level..
I guess it is how you are raised and your own personal self worth..not the dollar amount you have in your pocket and the material items you need to keep up with the "popular" people.. |

I think alot of us here probably ARE living below the poverty line. And...nope, not ashamed.
I would like to add that I work a full-time job that gives me great pleasure. It may not pay alot but by golly I'm happy to wake up in the morning and go to work. |

I think I'd have bigger things to worry about if I lived below the poverty line. |

Actually, I do live below the poverty line because the only work available to me right now is part time and the hours vary. No, I'm not ashamed. I work hard and do my best to live within my means.
Like other people have commented, it would be more shameful to be doing something that demeans you. If I live below the poverty line working, I am certainly not alone as many of the stable jobs have disappeared and have been replaced by service industry jobs that have always paid very little.
Who should be ashamed, me or the people who made the policies which in turn took people's livelihoods away? |

Why would I be shameful? I came from a country that was harsh on living conditions, where children are being paid only cents on the dollar to make nike shoes or any other things here where they sell it for 1000 times the cost to make.
Now, I am living comfotable here and that I made it on my own. I have a house, two cars, I love my job as a cop, I have a savings account and a Roth IRA account and I have a loving boyfriend that loves me. The only thing that I still am proud is that I came from a poor country and then I made it all this way to be a successful person. |

I would be seriously struggling to support my family if I only made $13,200 a year for myself and my son (poverty level per Wikipedia for a family of 2). I think feeling shame would take a back seat to making sure I kept a roof over my head and food on the table. Given that anywhere from 12-15% of the population fall into this category, the shame is that we cannot find better ways to help reduce that percentage. |

Well it certainly shouldn*t be something someone should be proud of. In america there are sooo many options, people having no excuse to be below the poverty line, besides laziness. |

It is not shameful to live below the poverty line especially if the person tries to make a living working regardless of how much he gets paid. I think shameful is being able bodied and a document resident or citizen of the USA with a sign beside a roadway begging for a handout.... |

I'd be ashamed if I lived below the Mason-Dixon Line. |

No, there is no shame in that. What is shameful is doing something that gives up your dignity like becoming a stripper or prostitute. Also, making money in an illegal or exploitative way is shameful. |

Living below the poverty line is not shameful if you are broke and not poor. Broke is temporary. Poor is long-term. The difference is that almost everyone is broke at one time or another and does something about it. Poor is when you wallow in self-pity and don't help yourself. It's a shame in this great nation of ours that there are so many poor people that don't take advantage of the many opportunities. |
