Would you consider this retired couple to be average, well-off, or very well off.?
They have no mortgage, no debts and an income after tax of £500 per week from pensions and investments

Their situation almost exactly mirrors my own. We have no financial problems, and are very happy with our lives. To answer your question, somewhere between average and well off.

The secret to a happy retirement is exactly that.

No mortgage, no debts.

After that income does not really matter, as long as they have enough to live on, and good family.

The reason they are well off, is because they were obviously good with money. And yes, they are mentally and financially well-off.

To me, very very average....bordering on not prepared for retirement. Especially when their age is not known. They could be younger retirees or older. But if you plan to enjoy the golden years, travel, etc..$40, 000 US is not very much. What if they get sick..do they have long-term care insurance? Also, if retired, all your money should not be in investments...if the market goes down..so does your retirement money...and there may not be time to wait for the market to recover by the time you need that money.

Well off in the UK, the mortgage and debt is what most of a persons weekly/monthly wage goes towards. Being mortgage and debt free with that kind of money left over is very rare and most people here would cosider themselves extremely lucky. Some families have to live off £200 a week whilst struggling with a mmortgageand debts. There very lucky!

To borrow the phrase "beauty is in the eye of the beholder," in the U.S. that would translate to an income of approximately $40,000.00 per year which in my opinion would be above average but below well off.

Slowly does it.

VERY well off...what are they retired politicians!

Comfortable, but if some of their income is due to investment income from shares and savings their standard of living may worsen.

COLIN T
Well off.

I think that you have to define "well off" here. Certainly they can live and exist well enough on this income but to have any good quality of life after they have worked hard and raised a family £500 a week won't get you very far. When you take food, utility bills, life insurance, car expenses (if they have one) council taxes, upkeep on their house etc..It wouldn't leave a lot left over to save for holidays. If they want to just "exist" in retirement then they can do this comfortably - but if they want to "live" then it's not enough. In my opinion....
