Unfortunatly my husband and I have HAD to quit our job at the same place, becuase they started to mess us around with the hours they were giving us. My hubby has been there for 3 years ! It got the the point we were getting 18 hours a week, but every other week would be less hours so we couldn't pay our rent and couldn't get any housing aid because of the times we WERE getting 18 hours ! B!oody pathetic ! He started that job doing over 45 hours a week ! We have 2 young children, we have to go on the dole but it is not permanent !!!!!!! God no ! I have no problem with people being on the dole if they genuinly cannot work or are looking for work, but the ones who don't want to work and the 'goverment looks after me' attitude, makes me sick !!!
If you haven't got a job, go on the dole, by the time it's all sorted out, you should hoepfully already have a job and you'll get some money in your back pocket from the social to pay 'last weeks' bills ! Good luck, don't be ashamed, you're one of the good ones wanting to work !
I've just got a phone call actually for a job I've applied for, so fingers crossed !!! Just sent him my CV. xxx |

If I had no job I'd have to and it's my money I'd be claiming back so it's ok. |

1. You don't need to 'consider' going on the dole!
2. Jobseekers Allowance is your entitlement providing you qualify by National Insurance contributions. |

In between two jobs I received Jobseekers Allowance, which wasn't much, and I applied for job after job after job ... I hated it. It was totally demoralising. I have worked for 40 years almost non-stop, and I hate not working. Being out of work made me realise how horrible it is, in all sorts of ways. And I do agree with people who say 'If you really want to work, you will find work'. I wouldn't have cared what I did. But waking in the morning and thinking 'I have no work today' is a terrible feeling. But I was brought up with a very Protestant work ethic and unemployment was considered shameful. |

Most people on the "dole" have to be - they haven't "considered" it. It was a necessity. Never say never - it is there if it is needed. |

i just had to claim job seekers allowance (much prefer that name)
i have just graduated as a diagnostic radiographer and have more qualifications than the staff in the job centre i suspect BUT i am desparately searching for a job (i have applied to one-i am waiting to hear from them) i have no money and i dont want to rely on parents or my overdraft so i had to. i was a full time nursery nurse years ago so i paid my taxes then and i will do for the next 40yrs.
i havent received any money yet and i hope i get a job before i do-i dont want it i NEED it
abfab55-that is a very immature, narrow minded opinion-its not black and white-lets hope you never need help in the future |

This is one of those questions that means different things depending on demographics. Some of the people here obviously still live at home or are not the sole breadwinner and don't have to pay rent. mortgage bills at all or on their own so they saying no should be seen in this light.
Also if you are European as apposed to American the idea of Social Security does not have the stigma it may have in the US which does not have a tradition of Social Welfare.
I have been on the dole because in England thats what the social welfare system is there for. You dont have a job you still have to eat they pay you money until you find a job. Simple.
Of course some people abuse it but some people abuse free speech by swearing while drunk in the street at 2am in the morning, but you dont ban speaking. |

Iv always said i wouldn't as it would make me feel like poo poo but i'm really strugling to find a job atm. I think it's because of the state of the economy at the moment no one is looking to employ. That's what i have been told anyway. I'm considering it at the moment because i could do with the help finding a job and the money is just a brucie bonus really. |

Yes. I have done when I was off sick with depression. However during that time I also volunteered a couple of days a week with a local charitable organisation. So when all is said and done, I didn't actually receive something for nothing! |

Some of these people are idiots do they honestly beleive for example if they break their arm and are out of work for 8 weeks they wouldnt claim the dole.Do they honestly think that imagine kids hungry but no mammy wont claim the dole due to pride just to (keep up with the jones).Seriously guys pull your heads from out of your own ars es and get a reality check. |

I am currently a Full-Time Freelance Jobseeker & on Jobseeker's Allowance (a.k.a. Pauper's Pittance to ME) ! ! I was doing the #1 HATED JOB in the UK if NOT the WORLD ! I was given my P45 because I was NOT bringing in ENOUGH REVENUE (£'s !) to the Company which had TAKEN OVER the CONTRACT from MY FORMER EMPLOYER which was contracted to do the ENFORCEMENT for another PUBLIC BODY ! I was FORCED OUT of MY JOB because of the way the CONTRACT between MY EMPLOYER & the PUBLIC BODY was DRAWN UP ! |

I would never consider going on the dole, but I have done in the past and will do again if I ever find myself in the same position again. If you're unemployed it's not a case of extra cash, it's a case of trying to meet your obligations until you can find work. Unfortunately regardless of what you read in the papers, the majority of people do not choose to go on the dole, it's not something that I wanted for myself, but circumstances out of my control. It's the same with alot of people. For example what about those who suddenly become ill, or those who's children may become ill. What I will say is that it should never be considered as a long term thing, as the longer you're on it the harder it is to come off it.
Edit-abfab55. People are entitled to their opinion, but can you please explain to me how, it can be stealing when you have to apply for it. It is my understanding that stealing is the unlawful taking of goods, money and possessions that are not yours. Secondly how can it be stealing when you've paid your taxes, and you NI for years, then have to sign on for a period of time. And if anyone is stealing it's the bl00dy rich stealing from the poor. Fat cat bosses spring to mind.eg bbc directors, utility companies, ect, so get off your narrow minded high horse, get down on your knees and be thankful that all is ok in your world, and don't judge others so harshly. |

Yes. The problem is, it has a bad name because of all the dodgy people out there who are on the dole and have no intention of going to work. But those who genuinely need it shouldn't be made to feel bad for claiming it. |

In America it is welfare and a big fat yes!!! If you need the help don't be ashamed to ask for it. If you don't need it then don't get it.
Society make it out to be bad but it isn't. Especially as hard as times are now.
Heck wish I could get on the dole. In the us it is limited. I heard your is unlimited. |

I have just gone on the dole after losing my job and oh, what misery!!
I almost wish I had not bothered. The amount of hoops they expect you to jump through just to get a paltry £60 a week, that does not cover my outgoings.
The derisory looks and personal questions recieved from nosey bloody desk jockeys makes me want to tell them to stick it up a place the sun don't shine.
The Housing and Counil Tax benefit is the same.
I do not want to be on the dole, I want a job, and I even ask the automons who serve me what qualifications I need to do their job, and if any positions are vacant, as I am that desperate to try and instill a little satisfaction and pride back into my life after only one month of not working, that I would seriously consider swooping to DWP levels and give everyone else the **** I get.
30 applications sent, 10 negative responses, 3 interviews and a phone call to make tomorrow. I will have a job this month!!! |

I did consider it, but i didnt do it. I figured i was better off staying in my crappy job and gaining the magical word "EXPERIENCE", even though im on less money than i would be on the dole! Its not fair at all is it? |

There's nothing wrong with it as long as your trying to look for a job and not just being lazy and claiming money instead of earning it. x |

Yes, I used to always thing ugh I'd never go on the dole but when I Came home from Oz I was jobless for about six weeks and applyed for the dole and got a nice lump sum...I pay taxes so why not? I'm in full time employment now. |

if I had to, because I could not find ANY work, then I would, but in my area there is plenty of work, I can't see it happening. Since I left school I have been working, so if I ever need it I will not be ashamed to ask for help, I'm not sure I could handle being that broke though. |
|

i don't think we should feel ashamed of taking advantage of this benefit that we rightly deserve. Besides, while you're looking for jobs, they'll pay for your NI, if not you'll have to pay that back in the future, out of your own pocket....
so, yes... it's not for people sitting on their bum all day only. I pay tax, alot of tax, sooo it's only fair that I get my rightful share when I'm in trouble. |
