Would you report it to your bank if they accidently gave you £500?
I recently withdrew £500 pounds from a high street bank, using a ISA paying in book, but the cashier did not get me to sign for it and the transaction was never recorded on the book, should i report this, or should i p!ss the money up the wall?

Keep the money and p*ss it up the wall and when they do realise their mistake .. and they will ... this is a bank we are talking about .. (greedy bankers)... offer to pay them back a small amount every week...
hell dude wot u waiting for go spend spend spend !!

Jen
I would report it. In fact, I've had a similar thing happen and did report it. They will eventually find the error and then you'll be up a creek for having pissed the money away.

Aside from this, you'd feel better about yourself for doing the right thing. ; )

report it as when they discover the error you will have to pay it back or at least pay a penalty

Yeah. report it and make this world a better place.

Chances are- it has been recorded- even if you havent signed for it- see if it's gone out of your ISA next week- if not- then the decision is purely yours. You should be honest about it, if they realise they might fine you- or just take the money out when you least expect it and you'll be short of cash.

sholaouk
Well if it was you that made the mistake, would you hope the customer came back and reported it?

The person that will pay for the mistake is the bank clerk, not the bank itself.

Report it, and give the poor cashier a break. In any case they might still know it was you anyway and might still take it from your account.

Yes I would, I know someone that was charged interest, as well as having to pay amount back when the bank eventually discovered it.

IT HAPPENED TO ME... I returned it, for I would want someone to return it to me if I had made the error !!

Live your life Honestly and your life gets only better and better !! Perhaps you will not see the payback for your honesty right away but then perhaps you are looking to hard ! aaaaaaaaaaaah life is good !! Live Honest !! : )

I would report it (yes, goody two shoes I know) because these things have a habit of catching up with you. Her fault though!

Yes, I would report it. This has happened to me in the past, and I reported it then. As well as having to live with a giulty conscionce, I would hate to see someone lose their job because of it.

They will find it, best give it back or it could get legal

ever heard of karma?
what goes around comes around.

give the money back.
otherwise you could end up with £1000 of karma on your ***.

i suggest you do the right thing...

break
report it, at the end of the day, if they have found that the money is missing they can get you to pay it back and that might just be financially diificult later!

daddysboicub

i would report it, because if i didnt, karma would kick me in the @$$ so fast my head would spin. they probably already know because the drawer was short that day, the teller went thru each transaction and they have each of his/her transactions on video tape so they can pinpoint who it was, and at what time it happened.
they may be holding out to see if you are an honest enough person to report it, before they report you.

stuckanswers
That's a toughie, but yeah, I would wind up reporting it.

Sooner or later the bank will realize their error and come after you for the money.

nikita
yes,i would!!! As it is said in the "GEETA", <<you are not punished for the sin but you are punished by the sin!!>> If i was in your place and make as if i did not return it, i would feel guilty!!!!!! An advice:if you did not return, return it and note that you will be relieved!!!!!!

I suggest you report it, it just may get picked - think of the consequences...

Yes, and I'll tell you why. Transactions are traced back to the person who dealt with you and she/he is then in trouble.

I once had a bank give me $380 that was not supposed to be in my account. The bank branches from state to state were not linked and somehow there was an error.
I did tell them and I sat in the ban and called the California branch. Neither bank listened to me. I knew I had withdrawn the money 2 weeks prior and I also knew exactly how much I had.
In the end, I kept insisting, but they would not listen. (I was there to close my account) I went ahead and closed the account, accepted the money, shook my head, went to my car, felt like a thief and then.......thanked God and went to the store.
My concience was clean because I did try to do the right thing, even to an extreme point. So, I kept it and I needed it.

Banks can go back and look for this. Just because you didn't sign it doesn't mean anything. Just don't go wild spending this money yet. They still could find you. Nothing is really ever FREE.

I'd agonize over it, probably do like you and ask here, let them know, then every time I run short of money for the next 5 years cuss myself for being honest about it.

Franco
The cashier who gave you the money will have to pay it to the bank. Otherwise he could just take any money he wanted for himself.

clerical error - don't mention it - just send me 100 to keep quiet ;)

added 11:39 - The error was made at the desk, so there's no record of it, so no chance they'll find out, as some have suggested. They'll find out they've got a negative difference, but can't tell where it happened.
