Your retirement or your children's education?
Which do you think is more important to save for?

Retirement fund.
In the future, your children will be grateful that they don't need to heavily financially support you. They will have their own financial burdens. With your retirement fund in place, you don't add to their financial burdens.

If anyone here is interested to find out if they are financially ready to retire, check out this website and you'll find out the answer. And you will also find out what you must do to retire earlier.

there are many scholarships, and even more financial aid (reduced tuition, loans) out there; I know of no such program for retirees.

I believe that you do better in school if you are working for it yourself. My parents didn't pay for my college, and I actually made the dean's list several times because I was paying for it, and didn't want to waste my money. So I say if you want to pay for your kid's education after they've earned their grades as a "present" without telling them you are going to, then great, but otherwise save for your retirement. You don't want your kid wasting thousands of dollars they didn't earn.

Your retirement. Your kids will have there entire life to pay off student loans. If you dont save for retirement, you will have nothing.

Feeling Mutual
Your retirement.

Kids study harder if they have to pay for their education themselves.

Your retirement should be the primary focus. If you have enough money in your retirement accounts, you can always take it out for education but you cannot take the education money and move it into retirement account.

Plus, if your kid grows up to be a "bad apple", he/she in most instances can take the education money and run.

Whereas, if you do your retirement planning properly, you can use money to "control" his/her destiny.

I think both are important, but here lately, I'd say retirement. The older and wiser I get, I see the unimportance of paid higher education. I would never discourage my child from going to college, but would more happily give them a down payment to start a business or some other venture.

So, retirement and a "child's future fund" for me!

Both if you have the finances to do it...are your children young...then start putting small amounts away...and put away for your retirement each week from your check...do this automatically...you will adjust and before you know your retirement will grow...check your employer some offer programs for both....

Retirement.

Let the kiddies pay their own way to school if they want to go. They'll appreciate it more and hopefully work/study harder if it comes from their own pocket or they have to get a student loan and pay it back. Good life lesson too - welcome to the world of adulthood and now it's time to step up to the plate and pay your own way.

I agree with your retirement...school loans are cheep as far as loans are concerned, also another idea is what my husband is doing...he is currently working on his masters and is then going to get his PhD in Accounting and then as a semi retirement he is going to teach at a university so that our children can get a free education if they want
