I still have receipts from 2 years ago. They all go into a monthly envelope, and at the end of the month into an accordion box for storing.
I really should get out my shredder one of these days and get rid of the oldest ones...
As to how long you should keep them: regular receipts probably a couple of months, really.
But keep all income tax receipts and other big purchases for at least a couple of years. |

The longest would be thirty days.
I'd suggest holding onto them...in a seperate bag at home. |

You can keep a receipt for a month. If I buy something I want,I throw those away, but something for the family?,I keep those for a month. They may have to return it for some reason. |

well if you get your product and it seems fine in every way, then you can probably throw it away.
if you want to get technical you can have a file cabinet and keep them for a month to two months... |

I think one of the main determining factors is how you paid for it. If you paid with a credit card, debit card, or check; generally about a month would be sufficient. Once your credit card statement and bank statement arrive, check your receipts against that of the statement. If the statement and receipts match, it's probably okay to toss the receipts.
With cash, I suggest about 6 months. There is no other record to prove that you paid, where as the other receipts have a statement proving you paid.
There are exceptions, however. If you are unsure about the item and don't know if you'll want to keep it or return it, keep the receipt until you have decided upon it. For major purchases that need the receipt for warranty, make sure that you keep these ones. |
