start with a mix of DOW 30 fund and/or s&P500 fund and/or mid-cap growth fund.
these will keep you out of trouble until you find something else that you prefer.
dont get involved in options if you dont understand them reasonably well. |

If you can't affort to lose much money, your best and safest bet is probably TIPS, which pay a small premium to the rate of inflation. That will keep your investment "safe" in the event of hyper-inflation. |

Find something safe - Europe is just too unstable.
We may end up bailing THEM out.
Another option you may consider.
Do you have a car note? - pay it off.
Do you have a mortgage - pay extra towards principal.
There are many people that think the markets will do well. Perhaps in the long term.
But I honestly think we could go down another 10% easily.
You could consider treasury notes or CD's.

Put your Roth account in the Vanguard SP500 index fund, or Vanguard Total Stock Market index fund. Low expenses. Both good funds. Good luck. |

You don't state your age. Assuming that you're young, a more aggressive approach can be taken. Don't fall for all the "trading" crapola pushed by brokerages, etc. An IRA is for LONG TERM investing - not "trading." And, Good God, stay away from futures, options, etc! That crap is pushed by interests that want you to "day trade" so they can collect commission fees whether you gain or lose.
Start with a good no-load target date mutual fund like Vanguard or T. Rowe Price. You can change or diversify your holdings later when you have more in the account and are more informed on investing. Keep it simple in the beginning. |
