what paid bill records do I keep?
after paying household bills which bills do I need to keep for my records and how long?

Karen
get an according folder for each year and save eveything month to month.I keep up to 7 years of life bills.

Alex
Keep anything related to tax returns for at least 7 years because that's the time limit on IRS audits. Verify your W-2 & last pay stub each year, then get rid of the rest of them. Keep all major paperwork associated large purchases as long as they are in your possession. Keep loan information for at least 7 years after the loan is paid off. Information like the exact financial institution name may be needed for future credit/identity verification and items remain on a credit report for 7 years. You don't need to keep the monthly loan statements; once you've received and verified an annual statement, discard the monthly ones.

Utilities bills are important to create a reasonable budget because they can be seasonal. If you don't already have online access or email alerts for these bills, check the websites to see if you can sign up for them. This will save you lots of needless paper and save them money. I suggest creating a spreadsheet for the last 2 years bills and discarding the bills.

Shred anything with personal information to prevent identity theft.
