1st day in a new apartment.. Next door neighbor complained.?
Today was Day 1 at my new apartment. I decided to bring blankets and sleep there for the first night.

I got there around 11pm, put my blankets on the floor and lied down.
At 12am my friend called so we talked for 3 minutes and hung up.

Then my next door neighbor came knocking on the door telling me to turn my voice level down.I'm not stupid, I know it's 12am, no one is being noisy, I know what "minimal noise" is!

But the fact was that she could hear me. So the walls are paper thin. But I usually come home after 10pm, eat dinner, take a shower and watch TV late night so even if I turn down every noise there is no way for me to be asleep and silent at 10pm.

The only thing that bothers me is the fact that she came complaining on the first day, an hour after I walked in, about a 3 minute talk on the phone. I've never been complained about anything at my previous apartment where I stayed up till 3am everyday.

Now I'm paranoid and feel really scared about this 1 year lease I have ahead of me. I'm thinking "Will my neighbor look at me as enemy?" "Will the manager think that I'm a trouble maker?" "Will I not be able to even do my normal activities at night?"

This is the first apartment I'm living by myself, so I was so excited. But now I feel like it's going to be hell.

Also, is it possible to cancel my lease after 1 day? I haven't used anything(even water), moved anything in, I was only there overnight.

Help Meeeeeee!

Honestly talk to the manager.

Say something along the lines of, I understand every person has the right to peacefully enjoy their apartment, however you are concerned that after taking a phone call late at night you received a complaint.

Explain that you do work late and have to prepare you dinner and get ready for bed at a later hour and you are concerned that this may be an issue based upon the first evening.

Explain to your landlord that you understand that noise in the late night needs to be kept to a minimum,. however reasonably you should be able to make a meal, take a call and turn on the TV.

You are stuck in the lease, so you are best to work it out.
Talk to you landlord about it. Be upfront and fair

I would start logging a journal, it maybe that the neighbor has an unrealistic expectation of quite in an apartment building, i.e. the reason the place is empty

While it’s true that sounds carries when the unit is empty, living in an apartment complex does not mean you must be in bed quite by 11PM, you have an every right to talk on the phone or watch TV late into the evening, as long as your noise level is reasonable

Hey,

I have had similar issues- go round and apologise for the noise- sit down and have a cup of tea- get to know your neighbour. Ask if she can hear anything from other apartments.

Have a conversation- people tend to be far more accepting when they know the other person.

The next time your neighbor complains, explain frankly that you do NOT make excessive noise, and that you are sorry the walls are so thin that she can hear you. Clarify that you MAY make sounds which can be heard and that you will try to be reasonably quiet, but also firmly state that you simply cannot guarantee that your sounds from normal living will not be heard next door. And do all this with a smile on your face.

Good luck.

Maybe that's why the apt. was vacant when you found it. Don't freak until you get all the facts. It sounds like the problem is HER.

You cannot cancel or break your lease over this.

If there was no furniture and the apartment was basically empty, sounds and voices carry.

The neighbor sounds super sensitive and picky but you really have no choice other than to move in and live.

No one can expect complete silence or no noise at any hour. Excessive noise, yes, but walking, talking, low volume tv are all normal sounds of living.

If there was nothing in the apartment other than you, your phone and your blanket, then there was nothing to help absorb the noise.

Furniture and drapes really help absorb sound.
