A complicated renting question...?
I have been renting an apartment for a year now.. and I just cant seem to afford it, so I gave my notice a month ago, and I'm moving at the end of this month... The problem is I can't afford to pay the rest of this month's rent... I've paid half but I cant afford the other half... my landlady is calling everyday asking about it, even though I tell her I can't pay her now... What can I do? Is there any action I can take??

show good faith and give what you can afford to give her and continue to so until you pay her off. she can not refuse a payment attempt just because its not payment in full. be sure to get receipts for each amount you pay her so she can't try to claim later that you still her more. good luck.

Write her a letter explaining that you can't pay it now, but include in that letter a plan to pay off the rest in installments.

X amount by X date
X amount by X date
X amount by X date

As many payments as it takes until it is paid off.

You are legally responsible to pay for it, but if you can't afford it right now then make an agreement to pay for the rest in whatever way you can. That way she will stop bothering you, and you will eventually fulfill your obligation.

Since you have given notice, ask her if she can withhold the balance from your security deposit.

Just move out and spare her the cost of eviction.Plus she'll just take you to court and get a judgment for the rent plus expenses , So save yourself the hassle and move. She'll probably take your rent out of your deposit you paid.

Pay the lady you owe her the money. You lived there for the time you owe her the money. She can take you to court and get it. Better to avoid that.

Paying the rent is your responsibility. Also, you might take into consideration that your landlady may have financial obligations that she uses the rent to meet. You have only paid her for half the month ... this is not a usual practice and you are lucky that she has allowed you to pay this way.It sounds as though she is concerned you will not pay the remainder of your rent which may leave her in a bad situation. You need to find a way to pay her what you owe and leave with your integrity in tact . It's the only right thing to do!!

robert_ranchero
Well, as long as you've told her the truth, and have given notice, there isn't much more you can do. You have no legal recourse since you still owe rent. They will be able to try and collect any amount you owe. About the only option you may have, is to move as soon as possible.

The most important thing is to find a way to get the money to pay the rent. Mainly because this affects your rental history, and your ability to rent future places will be based on this. If your last landlord cant give you a good reference, then you will find it hard to be able to get a lease. Talk with your landlord and make a plan of when exactly you will be able to pay her. If you have to beg, borrow or (hopefully not) steal to get the money, it will pay off for you in the future.
