A question about council houses and waiting?
Is there any special circumstances that the council would take into account to get a house faster, or is it a case of you have to wait no matter what your circumstances?

London boroughs operate a banding system - from A-D (I think)

Band A are housed as a higher priority than B,C or D -

and Band D have lowest priority and have to wait longer.

Things that affect your banding include number of bedroom shared in your current home (i.e. overcrowding) - health, disability, your safety at your current place

There are circumstances and things they take into concideration when allocating you a place on the waiting list. People with children and on a low income go before single people with an average income. Certain health issues and disabilities make you more of a priority as does becoming unintentially homeless. But if you have somewhere to live which is safe and your not being threatened with eviction your wait is a lot longer.

Yes. If you were to "play the system" the council would have to accommodate to your needs.

For example; if you had children/expecting a child and do not have a permanent fixed address you would be seen as higher priority.

If you have health conditions that your current accommodation is affecting they also will push you up the list.

If you are homeless or become homeless they HAVE to find you a place to live no matter what.

All these circumstances refer to the urgency of an individual and the council look to catering to you before less priority on the list.

However once you are offered a residency it may not be in the best of areas or condition.

You just have to take your chances to be honest and the council tend to only offer you two different accommodations so you have to take one or leave it as they wont offer much more than that if you are not happy.

Being homeless moves you up a lot faster.

Nope...tons of families have children, and are still waiting. The best you can do is find a private landlord who will take tenants on housing benefit.

if you have children

if you are a foreigner with no job you will jump straight to the front of the queue
