Am I crazy to want to move out when I'm only 18???
I was originally planning on moving out as soon as I graduated high school, but decided to stay and go college...now with 1st semester and this year coming to an end, I'm downright miserable.

My parents ignore me 50% of the time, but the rest of the time they're making fun of me, yelling at me that I should move out, etc...my mom's an alcoholic and she and I get in an argument literally every day...Living at home doesn't even feel like home because I'm not aloud to be myself (gay) without being made fun of and am treated like worthless trash...I feel like I could run away for months and they'd be too drunk to notice. My mom's drunken rants have gotten in the way of my studies too......

I'd be moving to Chicago in an apt. that's $600/month...would probably get a roommate, 2 jobs, get my life together...then go to community college there for 2 years and eventually transfer to university.

Anyone else move out at 18? How'd it go? What were the pros/cons?
Additional Details
I know I'm not overwhelmed right now financially...only pay for gas, about 1/2 food...use my mom's car (she got a DUI, so I'm the only one who drives it now...one of the pros of having an alchoholic parent)......BUT I'm overwhelmed emotionally/psychologically which I'm beginning to think is a bigger deal than money.

Also I'll have over $1000 saved before I even make the move, just to be prepared if something bad happens.

People do it all the time. Get some help on campus or find a few roommates. Parents don't get a training manual on how to behave. They're just people and you don't need to dodge them anymore.

Kiss em goodbye.

i moved out when i was 18 and i was only a few miles away, i went to college in my town and i loved it, i was free and independent but i do have to admit i was at my old house alot because i was so used to that place even though we didn't get along most of the time. i first would tell you that when you want a roomate makesure their name is on the bills too for rent so they don't get a freebee and move out at anytime without paying. good luck! don't spend money like crazy either, its a time to be pretty cheap.

yeah thats too bad avbout your folks. move to a place where you'll get support, gay parts of towen or whatever. i dont thin you have a choice. for 600 id be gone.

brother_lu
most educated people move out as soon as high school is over.. nothing wrong with that

as soon as your education is finished you should be out of the house... and during college is one of those things that some people do and some people don't

It is time to go out on your own. You are wanting to make something out of yourself. She knows this, and that you are going to some day leave. That is why she is such a miserable wretch when she is around you. No one can help her but her. It will be hard, but you know what? You will be able to survive on your own because you have ambition and drive. I left right after my 19th birthday and haven't looked back. My mom was trying to hold me back, and I knew what I wanted. You can do it. Good luck.

Man I'm 23, and I want to get the hell out of my home as well, but the benefits of free rent and food available always has me swooned. My Mother is in her 50s, doesn't have friends, doesn't have any relationships (nor has she in 20 some odd years), and barely speaks with family (barely = when shes forced to, so once or twice a year). I totally understand why you'd want to do this, my advice, get out when you can, make sure you have the ability to get out and the ability to sustain yourself.

Renting with others is always a liability, I don't care how good your friend is, if they get a job offer 50mi away and just happens to be in 3 days, you're lookin for a new roommate before you can get one, get my drift? Necessary evil, but make sure that roommate can also pay up, don't let them slack off and pay you next month, next month may never come and then you're footing the bill anyways.

All I can say is good luck and do the best you can, school comes first, because in the end its all you have.

take it day by day.......good luck!

If rent is 600/mo - you might need 1800 just to move in plus furniture, initial household items, utility deposits since you have no credit, food, car insurance, probably 1500/mo in take home to afford everything - if you're going to move out on your own just to go to community college for 2 yrs - you could probably find a lot cheaper place than a big city like Chicago

Jack we all go thru the same things when we are young adults. I would advise you to stay put but under your circumstances it may be the best thing for your to do. But may i say first go on craigslist and see who has a room for rent. It would be less expensive and you can get on track with out all the other drama in your life. Best of luck

Laura the lover is here to help
I'mm not 18, I'm actually 13, but my brother is 17 and he is leaving for college asap. my mom would drive him crazy, i suggest that you move away from your parents asap, that kind of relationship can affect you and them for the rest of your life.

Good luck and happy holidays

If you are stressed out at home then you need to move out for our own well-being. I graduated highschool when I was barely 17 years old and moved into a condo when I was 17- now I'm about to be 20 years old and own my own house and am in college full-time. I love my parents and have always gotten along with them, but it comes a time when you have to move on and start a life of your own.
Anyways, if you are living in an unstable/unhealthy environment then it'd be best for you if you moved.

Before you move it's best to have at least $2,000 saved so you have time to find a stable job and what not. Also, get a roommate so you can just work one job and maybe still attend a couple of classes each semester.

ok, my brother is at a dorm in college, but my parents are NOT alchoholics. you should definetely move out! if you want to pursue a dream career, move out! but first, map out a plan.. find a room mate, a job, things that you'll need for the new house, and don't forget the extra money to spend on for food. This is a HUGE responsibility to take on! i would suggest saving up a little for now. if your mother and you are having trouble, it shows that you guys are both stubborn.. one of you guys will eventually have to give in. we all know who that's going to be, its gonna have to be you!! just agree with your mom even though she's wrong...you may get annoyed but live through it for a month, maybe things'll change!! good luck on your career, family, and your new home

no, im moving out too, you just have to be prepared for the BILLS

Nope your not crazy.
U have to realize living on your own is a lot more responsibility then you could possibly realize right now. Sounds like a good idea for you though. Try to always keep your self in a positive environment. When it comes to roommates grill em 1st, because living w/ others can be difficult. Make sure u vibe w/ em.
