lja102955 | Any good ideas on how to keep people from stealing the for sale signs we have posted to sell our home? |
The signs are along the highway leading up to our house and we have had to replace them 3 times in the past 2 weeks--I can't afford a security camera to catch the person who is doing this----so I would appreciate any creative ideas. |

Actually the sign are more than likely on the right of way, and the state or city is the ones removing them.. You are not allowed in most areas to post private signs on public property, such as roads and right of ways. Include telephone poles in this too. |

Looks like you have a secret admirer, why would they steal for sale signs, unless it's rented out. |

I can tell you who is removing them......the city, specifically, the Department of Transportation.
In most cities, you cannot post real estate signs in certain areas along a highway, and the city has the right to remove ANYTHING that is placed within the setbacks of all major highways.
You need to check with code enforcement....if you keep posting them, eventually, they will fine you.
That should solve the mystery for you. It is a COMMON issue. |

Leave the post in the ground and unbolt the sign every evening just before dark.................. |

Try hang them high, hard to reach, like a pole or something. Also, make sure it's allowed by the city, and they weren't the one who removed it. |

You could try smearing them with Vasoline. Since they aren't on your property, that's about all I can think of. Except that one guy's pee suggestion isn't half bad. You can get deer and other animal pee in the hunting (near sporting goods) section of Walmart. |

You need to let the law enforcers in your area know about this...It is a minor crime...however, it's been repeated...I'd call them for advising on what to do...is it possible to put signs in the windows of the home and will it still be visible from the road? If not, Talk to the police/sheriff. At least let them know about this and maybe they can be aware and make suggestions.... |

Write your address on them in permanent marker, then they will be of no use to anyone else. |

Wait outside with your car lights off and turn them on when they get near the signs. It's not a great alternative, but what else can you do. You can also pay a kid, which might be cheaper than a camera, to follow the people home so you know where they live. That way you can call the parents and straighten it out.
My boyfriend and I did something like this when we were teenagers. Kids were coming into my parents garage and stealing beer. So we slipped out into the garage with the lights off and waited until one of the kids snuck in to get the beer. When he was within feet of us and the beer, we flicked on the lights, yelled really loud and he freaked out and ran out of the garage. We never had another problem. |

Cover them in pee
Encircle them in a clear trip wire so they will stumble when they go to take them. |
