I had the same thing happen to me! I gave notice though and I scrubbed, cleaned and painted. When it came time to get my deposit, she claimed it was a pig stye! I couldn't believe my ears! She also wouldn't let me in the apartment to verifiy it! I wasn't taken to court though but I couldn't believe that anyone could be so dishonest when I had been good for the whole time that I have rented and did more than most tennants ever did! All I could do was chalk it up to bad experience! Figured next time I would just have to photograph everything and have a today's date on a newspaper to prove what was true. If only we had forsight!!!! At least we know what to do next time when we rent!

Sorry you had to go through all of this as well as having to shell out $1,700 dollars! Talk about cruel and unusual punishment! I really don't know what you could do but to protest. I know that some people have done things like where they live and post signs in their own yard saying that they were ripped off by so and so. Not that anyone would really pay much attention unless they were directly affiliated with her, but you are entitled to free speech. However at the same time, you can also be sued and it would still be ruled in her favor since there was already a court judgement against you. I don't know if the newspaper would even take up your side of the story as it would be too risky for them.
I would be mad as hell too, but not a damn thing I could do about it but to pray that one day she would slip up and justice would be served.
What it sounds like is that she was ticked that you left without notice and holding the bag so to speak. If you had given her notice, do you think she would have reacted this way? She was determined to get her money to cover payment while it would have been rented. Perhaps the house was due for a revamp anyway so why not just mess it up and recover with you to have all of the blame. I guess I see you as partly to blame, but she took well advantage of the rest when you set her up to begin with.

Do you have PROOF of what you claim that she did? Did you do a joint inspection with the landlord at move-out? Did you take your own pictures that showed the condition of the home when you left? If you have PROOF, that is an absolute defense against a claim of libel should you publish anything about this person. However defending yourself could get expensive if she wants to play hardball. And if you have that PROOF, why didn't you bring it to court with you when she sued you in the first place??

One SERIOUS caution, even if you have proof. Keep your trap shut about any judicial misconduct unless you have clear and convincing PROOF of that as well. Pissing off an ex-landlord who holds no sway over your life is one thing. Pissing off the judge hearing your case is a recipe for DISASTER of biblical proportions.

Your first mistake was moving without notice. If I were your landlord (and I was one for many years) I would have been pissed off at that. Not to the extent that I would have falsified evidence in court, but I damn sure would have sued you for the rent that would have been due for the required notice period! And, human nature being what it is, I'd probably go over the property with an extra-fine toothed comb and ding you for every nickel and dime I could come up with.

As a landlord myself, I dont agree with what she did, but this is how it will go down.
Sure you can go to the newspapers about her, if you want to go to jail. She went to court and got a judgement against you. She won. If you go to the newspapers or any other type of public source, I can guarantee you that you will end up in court again and this time it will be for slander. IF you are lucky and get a decent judge, he will only make you pay a fine and print a retraction (if they publish it).
Why "if they publish it"? Because the newspapers are not just going to print anything anybody tells them. They are going to check it out to see if its true and they are going to find out she won the case against you in court. So therefore your claim is false. They wont print it. You are a disgruntled tenant.
If they printed it, the landlord would then have a case against them as well as you and will be swimming in the money she sue you both for.
My advise, go on with your life. You are out of there and dont have to deal with her any longer.
She is the type that give the good landlords a bad name.

The case has already been heard in court. The time to have proven your case is over. You lost and it sucks. Move on. From the info you have given it does sound like the judge may have made some poor decisions. No landlord gets new rugs or paint paid for after a 10 year tenancy!!
You made some mistakes also. You should have done a move out walk through and taken your own pictures.
You should have done a move in walk through, taken pics and saved them for the entire 10 years.
You cannot put anything in the local paper, it would be considered defamation. The landlord could sue you for that, too!

Chalk it up to experience (not taking your own pictures) and move on.

This would make me furious. I had a minor scuffle with a landlord once. Since then, I take pictures of the entire property on my first and last days living there. I think you should definitely do something because that is incredibly unethical. Without proof, I'm not sure how much you can do, though. Things like this happen much more than they should and lots of people get cheated out of their money. If you could find something in your defense, you could counter-sue. Good luck with that.

Ithink i would approach the landlord and ask her why she as done what she as done .How much of the 1700 dollars ia notice money and how much was damage money...

Hannah
i would report it to the magazine real people. tell them your side of the story..you earn money for it too

It All Matters.~☺♥
Take her to court. Bring in witnesses to tell your story and expose the bitc*. And go for twice the amount at least and all of the court costs. Your reputation is priceless.

pennfire51
i would tell the local paper and also around me the local ABC news has a department witch they even put stuff like that on TV and even invest agate it. That is one of the reason why when i leave an apartment. I always take pictures before i leave and have a couple of references so snakes like her can not pull that stuff.
