Star | Anyone know anything about apartment searching? |
I will be moving by the end of the month to another state and of course I will need to find a place to live. Does anyone know of any sites that give good information on renting apartments? Also, I do not know what I'll need to rent an apartment seeing as how this is my first time getting a place of my own so I'm not sure what paperwork or information I will have to provide in order to obtain a place. I don't want anything overly expensive since I will be getting a job when I get there so right now needing a place I can afford is number one. Any information anyone can give would be extremely helpful. Additional Details I've heard that I might have my credit checked but I don't have a credit card, never have, always used cash |

www.rent.com is a good website. You will need deposits (first, last security), Photo ID, Social Security #, Job verification, Income Verification, references (if none - family references). It's hard to get it going but not too difficult, just expensive at first. |

You will need a damage deposit (half of your rent), first months rent and in some cases last months rent. You may need a co-signer if you don't have any rental history. My Mom who lives in another city was mine and I faxed her the forms, and the company was fine with that. Many apartments don't allow animals and some are going smoke free now so you'll have to keep that in mind if you are planning on doing/having either. Try to find a place that is run by a decent company, a lot of cheap places (like mine) have slum land lords who don't do anything you ask. Many places don't accept cash for payment so have checks ready. With that in mind too, a lot of places don't stay on the market long so you will need to act fast. Also, having references, being neatly groomed, and not bringing along loud friends with you can help. You should bring a long a friend (for safety) but make sure they aren't loud otherwise the caretaker might think you guys are partiers. Look on university bulletin boards, rental guides, keep an eye out on the street for posters advertising sublets and I think apartments.com is a good site too.
Good Luck |

Local newspapers are now often online as well, and can be used to find rental listings. |

Try the local real estate agencies in the area that you wish to move the many time have apartments and housing available and employ property managers that are hired to rent available units. And you can find most of them listed on their websites.
You could also go on-line and look at newspapers that are local to the area. .Also if you move close to a college or university they usually have cheaper available housing due to students. Most these days require background and credit checks, social security number, picture ID. There is usually required during the application process. Most require first-last month rent and security deposit. Good luck with your search. |
