Anyone worried that they will never be able to afford their own home?
House prices seem to be rising way above inflation every month. Is anyone else scarred that they may never be able to afford their own home?

I am fairly resigned to the fact that my husband and I will not be able to own our own home in the near future, if at all.

What annoys me is when I hear people say that 'young people today need to make sacrifices to own their own home'. What they don't seem to realise is that it's not just about how much you have as a deposit (and as you save money the prices are still increasing regardless) but that house prices are just too far out of our reach because salaries haven't increased at the same rate. We have been to see a mortgage broker who has calculated that we could get a mortgage of around £80,000, which in our area wouldn't even buy us a studio flat.

I am not sure if worried is the right word, or whether angry is more apt. When the average price of a house is now 7x the average wage there is a serious problem ... a serious problem that a certain bunch of idiots in London are doing nothing about.

There is a theory that the national debt of the country is causing a housing bubble and into the future a correction will have to be made to change the situation, in which case those that rent will be able to smile a little. Until then I'll keep paying out a vast amount of money for rent and be forced to bypass those funds that would otherwise be saved for a deposit.

Absolutely. And it makes me furious, because I did not go to uni and get a good job just so I could donate £500 a month to my rich landlady to make her even richer. What annoys me about renting is, we're just making the situation even worse by giving people income to buy even more houses and keep the prices up... so we're screwing ourselves over, because we have no choice- gotta live somewhere.

I move regularly so I never feel too bitter about giving any one indidivual so much of my money, but my boyfriend has lived in the same place for 5 years and we worked out has given his landlord about £20,000. It's so unfair.

And meanwhile, with London rents being what they are, I can't afford to save for a deposit... it's just a vicious cycle. I'm only 24 so too young to panic for myself, I don't know what kind of money I could be making in 5 years... but this kind of inequality just gets me really f**ked off.

Plus I have friends who are nurses or teachers, work a million times harder than me, and know they will never earn over a certain amount and it's not going to be enough for a nice home, which is the least that they deserve.

Until buy to let mortgages are banned this will continue.

I am so grateful to my hubby. Before I met him, he built his own house on a $25,000 a year salary. He lived in a trailer for several years, and bought some property. He built our house a little at a time as he could afford the materials. Took him 3 years, but it was well worth it. Now, we have a nice 3 bedroom, 2 bath home on 79 acres and no mortgage.

I feel sad for my children and other people's that as you say, house prices are beyond the means of most youngsters hoping to get married and start families. This country will be a bigger nation of landlords and tenants soon.

Yep. Shared buying may be the only way onto the property ladder I fear.

Though I've heard that prices are set to drop come 2008 so hang in there a few more months and keep your fingers crossed!

My partner and I are getting married in August, and we are both pretty certain that we will never own our own home.
We both have previous marriages and chose to walk away with nothing, and subsequently have no savings. The main reason I wanted to buy a house was for security for my twelve year old daughter, but as this looks extremely unlikely, we have opted to try for a council house. It's not the ideal solution, but it does mean that we can rent securely long-term.

My husband and I currently own a home. We struggle to make the taxes payments. It is challenging with so many different taxes to keep up with.

Well, who isn't? Except if you have a rich daddy or married a sugardaddy. But that's another story. It's been like this for a while now. How do they suppose a newly wed couple should buy a house (cause you can't afford one alone) and support their children (if any) and buy a car (cause you need to get yourself around) and then on top of that you must support yourself?

Just crazy and what is wrong with this? I'll tell you - wait rather not...

Yes! My b/f and I have been living together for nearly 3 yrs now and we've always rented but now we're thinking about buying an old home and doing it up ourselves. Thanks to my b/f's father we will be able to afford to buy a home for the first time. My b/f makes very good money but still not good enough for a home. Sucks really! I think the bubble in the housing market will POP sooner than later!

Yes, I'm in a council house, I've made it my home, but it will never belong to me and the council can do whatever they like to it, even kick me out of it if they want, I have a constant dread that my home could be taken from me at any point. And when I die, my disabled daughter, who has lived here all her life, will be forced to move elsewhere.........very very scared,AND NO POSSIBLE CHANGE TO THAT CIRCUMSTANCE ANYWHERE IN SIGHT........

Rainbow_Crayon
I am. Alot.

no i have a very rich daddy! hehe
