I haven't lived in an apartment in years, but when I did I could always hear my neighbors. I could hear my next door neighbors if they had their tv up a little loud or music. I could her my neighbors above me when they droped something or walked around sometimes. I rarely heard noise from those under my apartment. Usually only if they were out on their patio. |

yes, and most apartments I've lived in that is the case. Mostly you just hear them when they are walking around. and it's so worse when they have kids. I have a child, so I made sure to have a bottom apt so he can run around without bothering anyone. That is just how it is with apartment living. I'm fine with it, a little noise doesn't hurt. Our upstairs neighbors are very nice and thoughtful people so they don't play loud music late at night or anything. I live in a historic building with a landlord who is careful about who goes where. No children on top floors.
I lived in a crappy apartment complex that was built very poorly, and we could hear people when they flush the toliet. We had one lady who moved upstairs from us, she was a single mom with a new baby, and she must of been really stressed. She would call security if our TV was too loud, or if I was blow drying my hair.
meet the neighbors if your looking at a place.
One thing that I like about apartments, being a single mom, is that if I started screaming, someone would hear it. vise versa |

I can always hear both....The ones above me are worse though. |

All the time. To the left of me there are two guys in their 50s who are trying to become rock stars, and their music is AWFUL. Below me is some guy who gets drunk and throws a one man rave party every night. To the right of me is a couple who fight all the time, and down the hall from me is a family with too many screaming children to count that like to use the hallway as a playground.
I can't wait to move. |

I lived in the bottom unit of a 2 story apartment. I could hear the people above me. I didn't hear their conversations or anything but I could hear their cat running around and their bed squeaking when they had sex. The real problem was the neighbor next to us. He would play his music really loud late into the night. A few times when I complained to him he was all upset and tried to say that it was reasonable since it was the weekend. I told him that Sunday night is not a weekend and when I have a 3 month old baby that can't sleep it doesn't matter what day of the week it is. This was all in an old building where everything was cheaply built and rent reflected that fact.
When I lived in a nice, fairly new, well constructed apartment on campus during college, I never once heard my neighbors. There were times when I could my next door neighbor's stereo blasting when I walked past their open door in the hall, but as soon as I went into my apartment and closed the door it was quite. I even put my ear against the wall just to see if I could hear anything and I couldn't. It really depends how the building is constructed. |

I live in a top unit. On occasion I hear my neighbors below me. Only when they are partying and have their music turned up, or they are out on the back balcony.
I have several friends within my condo complex, and I know that the ones who live below people always hear their foot steps, or when they are moving a chair from under the table. Sometimes it sounds like they live underneath elephants! |

Yes, all the time. The agent who sell me the apartment told me "new building are more noisy than old building because they cut back material use in the building." |

it's actually the guy NEXT to me that I hear. From above all I usually hear is someone flushing. |
