heatheer | Apartment lease? |
If I got approved on an apartment lease, and got the keys, and been living there for 2 months, paying my bills, and then I wanted to help out a friend, and allow him to live with me for free, does he need to be added to the lease? if so, why? |

Most leases state that anyone who stays with you, paying or not, for more than 2 weeks, needs to be on the lease. If your friend is going to stay there, then you need to add him or you are in breach of your rental agreement and can be asked to leave. Why? For several reasons:
1. If you stop paying, then both of you would be named in the evicton
2. If something bad happened to the building and they needed to identify the people living there, they need to have accurate records.
3. General liability of people on the property due to accidents, etc. Mangement needs to know who is living where, wheather they are paying or not.
We don't charge any more for people who are added to the lease, so you shouldn't worry about it. Just get him to go through the channels and you will be set. |

If you have a basic lease and he will be staying with you for more than two weeks you need to add him to the lease. The reason? The lease you signed says that you are required to. If your landlord discovers that your friend has been living with you you could be evicted. |

if someone resides in ur apartment for more than a week than it shoudl be approved by management as a long stayng guest. if they stay for longer then 30 days then their are considered living there esp if they are recieving mail. i think this person should at least get approved by management so they are aware of this person residing there. what happens if they want mail or packages delivered, or if they get locked out, they deserve the same rights as you do as a tenant. |

Sub-leasing may not be permitted by your agreement with the Land Lord...You could be evicted --- read the lease... What your doin is a sub-lease for your friend-- no one lives for free... |

Apartment complexes have their own set of rules. I would check with them first. On a lot of leases, if you have someone else living with you, then yes, their name would have to go on the lease. But if we are only talking about a few weeks till your friend gets straight then I wouldnt worry about it. |

I think this is a question for your landlord. Some places are more flexible then others. Also, be careful with letting a friend live with you for free, you don't want to ruin a friendship because it happens with situations like yours. Also, I have heard in Michigan, if someone gets mail to your address it proves they live there, and then if you wanted to tell them to move, they actually have 30 days legally to do it.
Be careful! |

You have to check your lease agreement for the specifics. Usually, they do require anyone living in an apartment to be on the lease. It's also a good idea, in case he damages anything or skips out on rent, so you're not held accountable for anything he might do. |

If you add him to the lease he will be expected to pass a credit check as well and pay a portion of the rent according to the leasing company. This would be your best protection. If you allow him to move in with you for free and not be added to the lease, it is possible for you to be evicted and have to pay the remaining balance of your lease period. Most lease contracts have a section that deals with people living with you for more than a visit and the consequences if this is found to be true without any notification to the leasing company. Read your lease for further information. It is very possible to be taken with an arrangement like this. Be careful. You could do more damage to your own credit record than you can imagine. |

If you add him to the lease- he become liable for things (ie- rent, utilities, damage). You really dont have to have him on the lease, but if the apartment finds out- than they mmight have an issue with it. All places are different. Did you get some sort of "tenants guideline" packet/book? That might help answer your question. You can also just make an anonymous call and pretend you're interested in an apartment with a friend and ask if that person has to be on the lease. |

If your friend is living there temporary, you don't need to contact the leasing office. However, if he plans to live there for a couple months or more, he needs to be added to the lease. According to your leasing agreement, the apartment is leased to you only. |
