Nodor | Apartment...upstairs or down? |
I am going to be moving into a new apartment in the next few months and I am undecided if I should look at a down stairs or up stairs apartment.
At the moment I live in an up stairs, so I am just wondering what to expect if I were to move into a downstairs. |

expect noise, and possibly a lower rent. i have heard that complexes charge more to upstairs units depending on the management. but move in will be a ton easier and you dont have to worry about walking upstairs on those tired days or drunken nights! |

I like being upstairs. At least I know no one will be jumping on their floor that will affect me from sleeping. There's also more privacy when you're upstairs. |

If you move to a downstairs apartment expect to hear the people above you ALL the time. If you live on the ground floor you can't leave your windows open incase someone breaks in, top floor has it's advantages. |

Definately stay upstairs. You never know how will be living above you if are downstairs. Maybe they have kids, dogs, or maybe stay up all night. I had some neighbors that used to play soccer in the apartment above me. And I mean that literally. It sucked, stuff used to fall off my shelves. |

its preference. downstairs u hear the ones over you but its more convenient moving heavy stuff and groceries and coming home drunk. but upstairs you have a better view and dont hear anyone but you gotta climb stairs everyday |

expect to hear all the squeaks and noises from the upstairs tennants
if they have a flood from a broken pipe ? so do you when it waterfalls into your place |

There are pro's and con's to both. If you live upstairs, the people below can hear every step you take - if you live downstairs, vice-versa. I prefer downstairs because I tend to stomp a little. I can live with the noisy neighbors but I don't like people having to put up with my crap.... |

Some pros - it will be much easier to move and get things like groceries in and out. Older or very young relatives/visitors can come by and you don't have to worry about them on the stairs. If you live where's a rough winter you won't have to worry about icy steps.
Some cons - You might hear the people above you. There also will probably be an increase in traffic with people walking by, headlights from cars (if the apartment faces the lot), and other things like that. :) |

People stomping around upstairs. Be prepared to hear them stomp around and drop things. It will be less hot in the summer downstairs, though, but cooler in the winter. It's all trade-offs. But with the downstairs, you won't have to worry about trying to get the couch and large appliances up there. |

I've lived in both situations. I would have say that they both have pros and cons, as with anything. Upstairs you can't hear people walking around, but you have to go up and down the stairs for groceries, pets potty breaks, etc. Downstairs you have to deal with people walking by and looking directly into your windows if you keep blinds open, but it is easier with a pet that uses the bathroom outside! If I had to choose I would stay upstairs. |

They both have there pro's and con's.
Downstairs- You don't have to worry about kids falling down the stairs. Don't have to move your furniture up the stairs. You generally can be loud (I don't mean really loud) and not have to worry about neighbors hearing you. You stay cooler in the summer, generally (depends on how the apartment is positioned). You might get a bigger or smaller porch. Your surrounded by at least 2 neighbors if not more. You'll have to deal with possible noise from neighbors above. Your more likely to be broken in to. Less exercise (up and down). Depending on the complex it might be a larger or smaller apartment. Might not be able to BBQ, on porch. |
