it would help if you stated where you are looking for. here is a site for toronto ontario where i live http://www.viewit.ca/ http://www.rentersnews.ca/

JBR
www.apartmentfinder.com

They have larger complexes but many smaller scale places are showcased on there. Just type in the city you want to live and go from there.

The answer depends on where you live. Typically a landlord will advertise in a local small paper. In my area it is called the Pennysaver. Also, some locals have small businesses that provide web-based advertising for landlords. Again, it is dependent on geographic location. For me it is www.rentrochester.com, for example. I would google "for rent" and the city in which you are looking. If I knew the location you were looking in the answer would be much more specific. Good luck.

rent.com is the best site. I have found my last two townhouses there. The best part is if you tell the rental office that you found them through this site, if you sign a lease there and report it to rent.com .. they send you a $100 debit card that you can use anywhere a visa credit card is accepted. I used mine to get some early christmas shopping done! <:)
