I mean, we live in an advanced age! Travel has become so wonderfully easy. Is it really necessary to tie ourselves down to moldy, decaying buildings? Is it not possible for everyone to lead an itinerant lifestyle? Wouldn't it be more healthy?

Who would operate these humble, country-inns? Obviously they would need permanent proprietors. And wouldn't those people need to have houses to live in? Or at least an apartment in the inn? So doesn't that qualify as tying oneself down to a moldy, decaying building?
Who would grow our food or produce the basic things we need to survive? These people need to be permanent residents on their land in order to grow and harvest crops. Even if all industry was scaled back to the cottage level, it would still require people to have cottages. It's not like you'd haul a loom around with you everywhere you went. And if our lifestyles were so dramatically scaled back, travel would no longer be wonderfully easy. There would be no one to manufacture aircraft or refine fuel or maintain roads because these are operations that require a stable and long-term work force.
So, to answer your question... yes, we need houses. And no, it is not possible for everyone to lead itinerant lifestyles. Personally, I wouldn't really want to anyway. I like having a place in the world. |

Good for you that you can travel 365 days a year. Most of us spend about 95% of our time working steady jobs to support ourselves and our families so that whole being tied to one place is kind of a necessity.
It would be a really messed up world if no one stayed in one place. How do you expect society to continue if we don't have people working permanent jobs to provide products and services to each other as well as the ability for each to buy the others goods? Sure, some material goods can be given up, but we can't exactly manage without doctors, law enforcement, farmers, etc. WTF are you smoking? |
