nfw | Are landlords responsible for minor cleanup in between tenants? |
We just moved out. We cleaned the place quite well (scrubbed the bathroom, kitchen, etc.), but we aren't perfect; we left a few things unclean: a few walls needed to be scrubbed, the fridge needed to be cleaned, etc.
Now we are being charged with a small cleaning bill, which I think is ok, but I was wondering if this is the way it should be done. Shouldn't landlords expect to have minor cleanup in between tenants? Are they allowed to charge us for this cleaning bill? |

It depends on your definition of "unclean" & the landlords. I've seen horrible messes left behind which the tenant thought it was acceptable. The apt should be left in the same condition as you found it.
Basically the landlord expects to do minor cleaning: rug shampoo, touch-up paint, ect. But if the mess starts bordering on gross or the landlord needs to hire a service...
A good way to tell reasonable expectations when they are not pre-defined is to ask yourself: would I rent an apt with these messes? If you are honest you'll know the answer.
In the future take a few pic's in the beginning, that way you will have a comparison. & get a written expectation of move out condition. |

I'm a landlord and this is my rule of thumb. I make sure the residence is clean, including the appliances, and the carpets are freshly shampooed. When the tenant moves out they are to have the carpets professionally clean, and, leave the place the way they found it (clean). I have done minor repairs and cleaning at no cost to the former tenant, but, unfortunately most people do a hurry up cleaning job and expect it to suffice. One other consideration is the length of residency. If a tenant occupies a residence for an extended period, I don't feel I can hold them accountable for paint, carpet, minor repairs, etc., unless they abused the place. I am reasonable with my tenants, and expect the same from them. So far that has worked. Unfortunately too many landlords are just the opposite, but, so are many tenants. Managing rentals can be a very tough job! |

Nope the tenant is expected to leave the unit in move in condition.
When my tenants move out I expect all surfaces to be cleaned. I expect all appliances to be cleaned. I expect carpets to be clean. I especially expect the washrooms to be spotless.
If the tenant has been there more than a few year I will expect that the walls may need painting, I have no issue doing that. However It isn't my responsibility to clean up somebody else's filth, and thus if I have to it will be deducted from thier deposit. |

Yeah, they're allowed to charge for any cleaning expenses. Most places have you make a deposit before you move in that is returned if you leave the place under good terms and in good shape. Yet, not all places are like this and for those that aren't they merely charge their previous tenants. |

If you made the mess you are responsible to clean it or pay for it to be cleaned. That should be obvious. "Normal" wear and tear is different. |

Technically they should only be charging if the house is less than "professionally" cleaned (whatever that means) in even the slightest sense so that they can get a cleaning company to clean.
Many times, they don't even bother looking if the house is actually clean to that level before getting cleaners to clean and charging the previous tenant for it. |

this is something you should have clarified prior to moving out. some people have different expectations, if its cleaning up garbage, etc, yes you should be charged, not for paint touch ups, etc. |

They are allowed to charge you in order to bring the place back to the way it was before you moved in. |

My last place charged us to clean the carpets and paint- and that's all they had to do - I had never had anyone charge us for that before - most of the time if the place is fairly clean, they expect to have to clean carpets and paint and have given me back my whole deposit and never sent a bill.
Maybe with the economy so bad they need to make up the man hours or something...
I didn't expect the bill, and I think they should pay for it... |

yes they are but you are not obligated to pay.. i was a landlord and everyone left the place a mess.. broken walls sinks clogged with grease.. rotor roter needed to open drains. broken windows all types of broken furniture left.. people living there that you dont know what their name is
you were good i wish i had a person like you.. pay if the place was clean before you moved in.. but dont pay if you had to clean to make it habitable.. any how its up to you. you dont have to pay.. |
