Jungle Princess | Are older homes better constructed than new? |
I have a 40's concrete block home and I really had to fix it up, updating it, rewiring it, etc., but it seems like newer houses are built so shoddily, and they fall apart in 5-10 years, What do you think? |
|

No, the old houses were built stronger than the new ones, with better materials, is like with the cars, the old car were stronger, in al ways than the new ones and longer lasting. |

You are definately correct. If you want a quality house you need a quality builder. |

It depends on a lot of things--how well it was built, the quality of materials, etc.
Many houses today are built using materials that are barely above code. I know several builders and contractors who use 1/2 inch plywood instead of at LEAST 3/4 inch to save money.
The problem with older homes is you don't know how well it's been taken care of. Some of the best built homes could be run down now because of wood rot, poor electrical wiring, etc. |

Some new homes are well built. Some are not. The same is true with older homes. The poor quality older homes are probabley gone by now. Average quality homes get repaired, maintained and upgraded as the years go by. |

A quality home that is well maintained will last for a very long time, whether built 40 years ago or 40 days ago. However, new homes are supposed to be built to modern building standards to meet hurricane, tornado, and earthquake codes, among other things. I've been through 4 category three hurricanes in modern homes. I wouldn't do that in an older home. |

I am with you! I LOVE older homes, they were built to last forever! Also, homes build before A/C tend to be placed so that they are naturally cooler, making them not only cheaper to cool, but better on the environment.
The only thing new homes have going for them is dual pane windows. Put those in your older home and you will have a gem! |

Yes and no - really depends on the house and how it has been cared for over the years. The original construction has typically gotten worse over the years, but one negative with an old house is that it usually has many owners and often the owners will do work themselves and often don't know what they're doing. I rehabbed a 100+ year old victorian and every simple project turned into hell because of what had been done previously that had to be corrected. |

i think older houses are better but they are really cold. my house is seventy years old and it takes over a day to heat up the whole house. |

Our house is over 100 years old . the bones are good, but the lack of insulation tends to be a problem. And yes, we've replaced some of the wiring, and some of the plumbing, but if there were a few more hours in the day, there are a good many things that could stand work. |
|

they have been saying that since time began. if they meet code, any house will last 100 years. |

It was really the quality of craftsmanship 40 years ago that you don't see today. Codes were different, than today. Costs obviously were much different. I would to some degree have to agree with your assessment. |
