Are tax returns required when renting an apartment?
I live in Texas and in the process of locating an apartment (my first). My current employer pays me in cash and I was wondering if presenting tax returns are generally a requisite during the application process for an apartment. I would have no problem presenting them considering that I file a different type of tax form but curious nonetheless. Additionally, do they ask to see check stubs? What has been your experience with dealing with the leasing office with regards to this?

You should be able to provide a letter from your employer verifying your salary. I have never had to show tax returns.

I think different states require different items when applying for an apartment. I know here in Missouri...they just ask for a copy of your last pay check stub and sometimes they run a credit check.

NEVER heard of them asking for tax returns. Might want check stub, but I doubt it. They usually just run a credit check on you.

If you don't have pay stubs then, yes, a tax return would be the next option to verify your income. If you have pay stubs, then requesting a tax return is a bit much. Be careful sharing your personal information! Much more than you should ever tell can be learned about you from your tax return.

they require tax returns and check stubs to establish your income, to make sure you can afford the apartment. So yes it is usual and customary for this in the rental process.

Your boss paying you in cash still requires you to pay tax returns though. If the government finds out you haven't filed for the income you received it is TAX FRAUD!! Beware ask you employer for a 1099 and report your income properly it is not worth it to get into the mix with the IRS, believe me!!

Some states require different items when wanting to rent out an apartment. You might want to check with your state housing authority to find out the requirements.

I am a former asst manager from arlington tx.
Heres the deal, you get paid cash so first theres a red flag for them what do you do, is it illegal, is your pay steady...
2nd how can you prove cash, your friend could write a letter for all they know,
SO, tax forms are the way to go! That way they know its not something illegal going on, if your selling drugs your not going to file it on your taxes,
This is why they didnt ask to see your bank acct information because banks dont ask where U got the $$.

They are just trying to cover their butts,,cash is not the norm when people have jobs...

No it's not required but a landlord will want to verify your income. How each landlord goes about would be different. If you work for a large company they may call human resources to verify the information with the HR manager. If you're self employed or work on a cash basis they may want a tax return to make sure you make what you put down on the application.

Bottom line is they're not going to just take your word for it. They will want to make sure that a tenant will be able to pay the rent on time every month.
